Day 112.  Reading Psalms 6, 8, 9, 10, 14, 16, 19, 20.
 

Read today’s scripture.

How do you love in these Psalms?

Psalm 6.

Perhaps this was written after David rescued his family from the Amalekites, only to come home and learn King Saul and his “Best Friend Forever” Jonathan had been killed in battle and Israel had been soundly defeated. He mourns and laments the losses.

  • I am weary with my moaning, every night I flood my bed with weeping.
  • My eye wastes away because of my grief; it grows weak because of all my foes.
  • Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the LORD has heard the sound of my weeping.
  • The LORD has heard my plea; the LORD accepts my prayer.

Psalm 8,

(I love this psalm!)

  • O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is Your Name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens.
  • Out of the mouths of babies and infants, You have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger.
  • When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon, and the stars, which You have set in place, what is MAN than You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care for him?

Psalm 9.

  • I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of Your wonderful deeds.
  • I  will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to Your name, O Most High.
  • The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.
  • And those who know Your Name, put their trust in You, for You, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek You.
  • Sing praises to the LORD, who sits enthroned in Zion! Tell among the peoples His deeds!
  • For He who avenges blood is mindful of them; He does not forget the cry of the afflicted.

Psalm 10.

  • Why, O LORD, do You stand far away?
  • Why do you hide Yourself in times of trouble?
  • In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised
  • In the pride of his face, the wicked does not seek Him; all his thoughts are, “There is no God.”
  • The helpless are crushed, sink down, and fall by his might.
  • He (the wicked) says in his heart, “God has forgotten, He has hidden His face, He will never see it.”
  • Arise, O LORD: O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted.
  • O LORD, You hear the desires of the afflicted; You will strengthen their heart; You will incline your ear to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. 

Psalm 14.

  • The FOOL has said in his heart, “There is no God.”  They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is NONE who does good.
  • The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see IF there are any who understand, who seek after God.
  • THEY HAVE ALL TURNED ASIDE; together they have become corrupt; there is NONE who does good, not even ONE.
  • Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!  When the LORD restores the fortunes of His people, let Jacob rejoice, let Israel be glad.

Psalm 16.

  • I say to the LORD, You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you.
  • I bless the LORD who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.
  • I have set the LORD always before me; because He is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.
  • Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices; my flesh who dwells secure.
  • You make known to me the path of life; in your presence, there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 19.

  • MAY THE LORD answer you in the day of trouble,
  • MAY THE NAME of the God of Jacob protect you!
  • MAY HE grant you your heart’s desires and fulfill all your plans!
  • MAY THE LORD fulfill all your petitions!
  • O LORD save the king!
  • MAY HE answer us when we call.

Psalm 21.

(I love reading this psalm pointing to David’s love for and closeness to the LORD … before his fall.)

  • O LORD, in Your strength the KING rejoices, and in Your salvation how greatly he exalts!
  • You have given him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips.
  • For You meet him with rich blessings; you set a crown of fine gold upon his head.
  • He asked life of You, and You gave it to him, length of days forever and ever.
  • HIS glory is great through Your salvation; splendor and majesty You bestow on HIM.
  • For You make him most blessed forever; You make him glad with the joy of Your presence.
  • For the KING trusts in the LORD, and through the mercy of the Most High he shall not be moved.

Yes, David will fail God horribly, but he was always “a man after God’s own heart.”

 

2024GOAL – Reading Through The Bible Chronologically, day 132

    Day 132—We are in our FIFTH month of Bible reading.   Are you loving God more each day? Are you reciting, praying, and singing the Psalms we’ve been reading?  Share in the comments section.

    Day 132 – Psalms 65, 66, 67, 69. 70. – (Psalms of God’s glory and awesomeness, and of humility and confession)

Read Psalms 65-67 in one swoop!  I’ll highlight phrases and verses. 

Psalm 65. “Praise is due to you, O God in Zion.:”   “O you, who hear prayer..”  “…You atone for our transgressions.”

“Blessed is the one You choose and bring near, to dwell in your courts!”    “By awesome deeds, you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation.”   “You make the going out of the morning and the evening to shout for joy.” (Sunrise & sunset)

Psalm 66.  “Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of His name, give to Him glorious praise!  Say to God, ‘How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you.”    “Come and see what God has done: He is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.”

“Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. I cried to Him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue.”    “If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.”    “Blessed be God, because He has not rejected my prayer or removed His steadfast love from me!”

Psalm 67. “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face to shine upon us.”    “Let the people praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! Let the nations be glad and sing for joy.”    “,,,let all the ends of the earth fear Him.”

Confess, lament your sin, and plead for God to help. But then praise Him. He is GREAT.

Psalm 69. “Save me, O God!”    “O God, You know my folly; the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.  Let not those who hope in You be put to shame through me, O Lord God of hosts; let not those who see You be brought to dishonor through me, O God of Israel.”

“Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me.  Hide not your face from your servant, for I am in distress; make haste to answer me. Draw near to my soul, redeem me….”

“I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify Him with thanksgiving. ”    “For the LORD hears the needy and does not despise His own people …”    “Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them. For God will save Zion…..”

Psalm 70. “Make haste, O God to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me!” “May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You! May those who love your salvation say evermore, “God is great!” “But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O LORD, do not delay!”

Hey, it’s okay to ask God to act quickly! Don’t panic, but pray!

#2024GOAL – Reading Through The Bible Chronologically, day 108

    Day 108 —  We have been reading the Bible daily for almost a third of the year. What have you learned about God? About yourself?

   Day 108 – Psalms 17, 35, 54, 63. (More psalms by David when being persecuted by Saul)

In Psalm 17, David petitions the LORD as many as SEVENTEEN times for protection. It’s a harrowing time for him, with Saul and his army always after him, and spies tattle-telling where he is hiding. 

“He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion lurking in ambush. Arise, O LORD! Confront him, subdue him!” Verse 12-13a 

“Keep me as the apple of your eye, hid me in the shadow of your wings.”  Verse 8

Psalm 35 calls for justice against David’s enemy and alludes to other foreign powers and even to all of God’s enemies.

Verse 17-18: “How long, O Lord, will you look on? Rescue me from their destruction, my precious life from the lions! I will thank you in the great congregation; in the mighty throng, I will praise you. “

Verse 19: “Let not those rejoice over me who are wrongfully my foes, and let not those “wink the eye” who hate me without a cause.”

Verse 17: “Let those who delight in my righteousness shout for joy and be glad and say evermore, ‘Great is the LORD who delights in the welfare of his servant!'”

In Psalm 54, again, the Ziphites went to Saul and told him of David’s whereabouts.  “O God, save me by your name and vindicate me by our might. O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth. For strangers have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life; they do not set God before themselves. Behold, God is my helper, the Lord is the upholder of my life.” Verses 1-4.

Psalm 64 is wonderful. Be sure to read all the verses. It’s almost entirely praise God.

See him in the wilderness – “O God, you are my God earnestly I seek you, MY SOUL THIRSTS FOR YOU; AS IN A DRY AND WEARY LAND WHERE THERE IS NO WATER.” Verse 1

“Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name, I will lift up my hands.” Verses 3-4

“…and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, when i remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me.” Verses 5b-8
