Day 280 – Reading – Matthew 8 and Mark 2

Read and believe in Jesus!

Matthew and Mark

In these two chapters, we see a flurry of miracles by Jesus – healings and deliverances – and some thorny questions answered. 

Matthew 8.

Again, Jesus meets a leper, a man filled with faith. He responds by touching and healing him. Our sinless Savior does NOT become unclean, but instead extends His own “cleanness” to the man. He then tells him to go to the Priest, as the law requires, to prove healing.

Before it was a city official, but now it is a Roman Centurion who comes to Jesus asking for healing for someone at home.  He tells Jesus that there is no need for Jesus to come in person, because he, a centurion, is a man of command. He recognizes that Jesus is, too.  “Say the word and my servant will be healed.”

Jesus is amazed at this Gentile’s faith, and says, “Go, let it be done for you according to your faith.”

Crowds begin to press against Jesus and his disciples, so He calls for a boat to go to the other side of Galilee. Before it’s ready, a scribe comes up to Him and vows, “I will follow you wherever you go!” (Did he mean to the other side of the lake??)

Another man tells Jesus he will follow Him anywhere, but first let him go bury his father. (This doesn’t mean his father is dead!  He simply wanted to remain at home and collect his inheritance before following Jesus.)

Jesus answered them curiously. “Foxes have holes and birds have nests. I have nowhere (permanently) to lay my head.” And, “Follow me and let the dead bury their dead.”

What in the world did Jesus mean?  He was saying to count the cost.  They must be willing to leave EVERYTHING to follow Him.

The boat comes and they climb aboard.  The disciples (at least the fishermen) begin rowing towards the other side.  Jesus goes to the bench at the back of the boat – and without a pillow – lies down and immediately falls asleep.

A great storm arises.

The boat is flooding.

The disciples panic.

“Save us, Lord; we are perishing.”  (Whoa, how appropriate! For in reality, this is what Jesus came to the world to do. But alas, they meant from the storm.)

Jesus speaks and there is now a great calm. They whisper and ask each other, “What sort of man is this, that even wind and sea obey him?”

On the east side of the lake, a demoniac or two greet them with wild screams and threats. THE DEMONS inside him recognized Jesus, even if the crowds did not.  “What have You to do with us, O Son of God?  Have You come here to torment us before the time?”

Jesus sends the devilish horde into the nearby herd of swine, which promptly runs to a cliff, and like lemmings, leap off to their death.  The man was FREE!  But the city wasn’t grateful.  “Please go away,” they tell Jesus.

Mark 2.

In this story, Jesus has returned to Capernaum.  He was in the home where he stayed and hordes of people now pressed against him inside and out.  A paralytic is carried to the edge of the crowd, but there is NO WAY that stretcher will go through the crowd.  The friends look up and get an idea.  Around back they carry the man up to the roof and begin dismantling the roof.  Everyone inside watched (and ducked the dust) as the sick man is lowered down by Jesus.

He is pleased with their ingenuity and faith.  “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

“What???” think some scribes who were inside checking up on Jesus. “He is blaspheming! No man can forgive sins. Only God.“

(Well, duh!)

Jesus then asks a curious question. Think about it before answering. “Which is easier to SAY to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven’ or ‘Rise, take up your bed and walk?'”

Actually, it’s easier to SAY ‘your sins are forgiven,’ because you don’t have to prove it outwardly.  It’s much harder to SAY ‘get up and walk’ because either the man can or cannot do it.

Either way, Jesus tells the man to get up, take his stretcher-bed, and walk. (He’s already forgiven his sins.}  Jesus, our all-powerful God in the flesh, can and does both forgive and heal.  PRAISE HIM!

The crowds were amazed and glorified God.  The scribes were silent.

Next, the people ask a question. “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but YOUR disciples don’t?

Simple.  Can you fast while the Bridegroom is here?  No. It’s time to rejoice.  When He is taken away, then there will be fasting.  Huh? Not sure if the people understood that. Or the disciples.  Jesus further causes their brains to work. “No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Or the patch tears away in the first wash. No one puts NEW WINE into old wineskins. Or the expanding, fermenting wine will split the old stiff wineskin.” 

 What in the world is Jesus saying? He is telling them that a NEW DAY has come. The Messiah is here. Rejoice for His coming and accept the prophesied Good News!

Not sure they totally understood.  But the disciples will.  Later.

Read and believe in Jesus!

Day 278 – Sunday’s Matthew 4 and Luke 4.

After Jesus was baptized by John, the Holy Spirit (just recently coming down on him like a dove) led Him into the desert “to be tempted by the devil.” (A specific reason)  The testing would last for 40 days. (Like Israel was “baptized in the Red Sea, then was tested in the wilderness for 40 years.  THEY failed. Jesus did not.)

  • FIRST TEMPTATION: I’m sure Jesus spent the beginning of those days communing with His Father.  Then, towards the end, when He was pretty hungry, Satan came to Him slyly (as the serpent in Eden ) with the suggestion, “IF You are the Son of God … command these stones to become loaves of bread.”

Jesus was hungry. Jesus was the Son of God. Jesus, who created those stones in the beginning, could very easily have turned them into bread. OR, created bread from nothing!  But, He would not sin and INDULGE Himself.  He answered Satan with the only thing that could make him run away: the Word of God. “IT IS WRITTEN, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Deut. 8:3)

  • SECOND TEMPTATION: Then the devil took Jesus (in body, or in His mind) to a very tall mountain, and let him see all the kingdoms of the world and their glory, down through time. “All these I will give to you (for they have been given to me) IF You would fall down and worship me.”  

But Jesus knew that  He would one day rule all the Kingdoms of the earth for eternity. He would not sin and ACQUIRE them now by worshiping that Serpent.  Jesus again quoted scripture (Deut. 6:13), “It is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only shall you serve.'”

  • THIRD TEMPTATION: As a last resort, Satan took Jesus (in body or mind) to the top of the Temple in Jerusalem, a portion of the portico roof that extended beyond the wall over the Kidron Valley, a drop of perhaps 450 feet.  “IF you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, ….for it is written;…. ‘He will command the angels concerning you to guard you. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot on a stone…'”  (And people will KNOW you are the Messiah!)

(Whoa, is Satan tricky, using the very Word of God to tempt. BEWARE!)

Jesus resisted this temptation to IMPRESS others, and in a strong, forceful voice, said, “It is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.'” (Deut. 6:16)  And the devil left him – for a time – and angels came and ministered to Jesus.

LOOK AT those three temptations in the light of 1 John 2:15-17, because Satan tempts all believers in Christ the SAME way!  “LOVE NOT the world nor the things in it.” Then John gives the three areas of temptation, as Jesus experienced, that reveal loving the world.

  1. the lust of the flesh (a desire to INDULGE our bodily cravings of all kinds)
  2. the lust of the eyes  (a desire to ACQUIRE for ourselves the things our eyes see)
  3. the pride of life/possessions (a desire to IMPRESS others with our own glory)

And how are believers to fight these loves of the world?  Same as Jesus. 1 John 2:14b, ‘because the WORD of God abides in you and you are strong.’  Read, meditate on, and memorize God’s word.  IT’S A SWORD in the hand and heart of the believer.

Satan always tempts us in these three areas. 

Look at the very first time he appeared with Eve and tempted her to disobey God’s WORD.  Genesis 3:6 says, “So when the woman saw the tree WAS GOOD FOR FOOD, and that it was a DELIGHT TO THE EYES, and that it was to be desired TO MAKE ONCE WISE (like God) ... she TOOK its fruit and ate it.”  

Unlike Jesus, she YIELDED. She did not simply repeat God’s Word to Satan, “God said, “of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat.”  Period.

  • (Oh, LORD, please help me to learn from this. Help me to be aware of the ways Satan would get me to sin. And Help me to use Your Word as a Sword, to defeat his wiles.  LORD, please help me to see HOW IMPORTANT reading and memorizing your word is, and do it!)

Read the other parts of today’s scripture (the rest of Matthew 4 and Luke 5.

After his baptism and temptations, Jesus began His ministry. 

  1. He began choosing His disciples (Luke includes Levi)
  2. traveling throughout all Galilee, teaching in synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom,
  3. healing every disease and affliction.

In Jesus’ own synagogue in Nazareth, He read from Isaiah 61:1-2, and announced that this scripture was speaking about HIM.  He got mixed reactions:  first, they marveled at his gracious words, then they were so full of jealousy and wrath that they drove him out of town.

But demons listened to and obeyed Him, and fled from their victims “post haste.”

Monday’s reading – Day 279 – John 2.

Jesus’ first “sign” miracle was turning large jugs of water into wine at a family wedding feast.  The host ran out of wine!!! (a huge, embarrassing no-no) Jesus’ mother came to Him with the problem and left the results entirely in His hands. 

(By the way, this is a good example of how to pray for our needs. Tell the Lord about your needs, worries, and emergencies … then leave the results up to Him, trusting He will answer in a way that is good for you and will bring glory to Him.)

Jesus acted quickly and quietly, behind the scenes.

What were the results of this first sign-miracle?  The host was vastly relieved.  The guests and newlyweds were happy. The servants who SAW the miracle firsthand were amazed. 

And Jesus’ disciples believed in Him.  (The exact reason John wrote this Gospel. See John 20:31)

John 3.

Another very familiar chapter, with the MOST WELL-KNOWN VERSE in the Bible.

Jesus met up with one of the Pharisees, Nicodemus, late one night. 

I always picture it in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus and His disciples often went to “chill out” while in Judea.  But the Bible does not say where they met. It might have been in the house where Jesus was staying.  “Probably,” John was quietly in the background, for he recorded their conversation word for word. 

Nicodemus was trying to ascertain for sure if Jesus was sent from God.  Was He the Messiah?

But Jesus, who came to die for the sins of Nicodemus and others, pointed the Pharisee to the more important issue.  He needed to be born again, born from above, born of the Spirit.  There was no way he could get into the Messiah’s Kingdom without a heart change.

Nicodemus should have known this; he WAS a teacher of the Law, after all.  For the very prophets he studied spoke over and over, that when the Messiah came, He would “take out their stony hearts and give them a heart of flesh.”

 But Nicodemus got hung up on the “born again” part.  Huh?  Go back into his mom’s womb…..??

“These are not physical things, but SPIRITUAL things that they were talking about. Faith, trust, belief.

Jesus compares himself to the serpent form that Moses held up in the wilderness. Those who looked on it in faith were healed.  HE would be lifted up, too. (on a cross)  “Whoever believes in Him will live eternally.”

“Because God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son (Jesus gesturing to himself), that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”

“For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through Him.”

“Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the Name of the only Son of God.

“This is the judgment: the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light because their works were evil.

“Whoever does what is true comes to the Light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”

“Think about this, Nicodemus!” Jesus might have said, while shaking his hand. “You are not so very far from the Messiah’s Kingdom.”

John 4.

This is that glorious story where Jesus, a Jewish man and teacher, sits down at a well and has a conversation with 1) a woman, 2) alone, 3) who is a “hated” Samaritan, and reveals that He is the Christ she’s been looking for, and offers her the water of Life.  

(Samaritans were hated because of long ago. when the Assyrians conquered Israel and deported most of the Jews to other lands, they brought back foreigners to run the business and agriculture of the land.  These pagan, idol-worshipers intermarried with the Jews that were left, mixing the pure religion of Jehovah with idolatry. They are called Samaritans because they settled around the old Northern Kingdom’s capital of Samaria.)

But Jesus sees hearts, and this woman’s heart was crying out for help, and love, and life.

Jesus offered it to her, and after confessing her sins, she believed and received it.  She also became an ardent missionary, running immediately to tell the whole town that she was saved, and that the Savior – the Man who revealed to her about her whole life – was there, in Samaria.  “Come and see!!”

MANY Samaritans believed that day.

Jesus said to the astonished disciples, “Look and see the fields! They are white for harvest! Pray for more workers!”

Back north in Galilee, past Cana (Yes, where the water to wine happened) to Capernaum, an official came running to Jesus, panicked about his son who was deathly ill. 

Man: “Sir, please come down before my son dies!”

Jesus: “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will not believe. (Was Jesus thinking about the faith of the Samaritan woman?) “Go, your son will live.”

The man BELIEVED the word Jesus spoke!

And Lo, and Behold, when he arrived home, his son was completely well – ever since the time when Jesus spoke!

And THEN, he truly believed, and all his household.  

John calls this the SECOND sign that Jesus was the Son of God.  He healed a person who was at the brink of death.

A NEW MONTH – THE NEW TESTAMENT!

Day 276 – Reading – Matthew 2

Read and believe in Jesus!

Matthew 2.

You wondered where the Kings were at the birthplace of Jesus, right?  After all, our Nativity Scenes have three of them displayed prominently, sometimes even with their camels. Well, the truth is, they weren’t at the stable. They didn’t join the shepherds to look at the newborn baby lying in the stone manger.  They didn’t lay down their gifts (along with the Little Drummer Boy’s drum) in front of the hours-old infant. 

The Kings, or perhaps we should say the Magi, were still months away.  After all, they saw the STAR way off in Chaldea when Jesus was born. They knew someone extraordinary had been born, a king. However, they had to consult all their charts, and finally the Jewish writings to see who and where he was born.  They came across a passage in a Hebrew Book of the Law and had an “aha!” moment. Numbers 24:17 prophesied where the Star would appear and where the King would rule.

“A star shall come out of Jacob, and a (king’s) scepter shall rise out of Israel.”

The minute the Magi saw that reference, they began packing their camels to follow the Star. But it takes a while to travel almost 1,000 miles.  The baby Jesus was now a toddler, and the family was living in a house in Bethlehem, not in a stable.

Arriving in Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel, these Magi, with their long caravan, began asking one and all, “Where is He who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star in the East when it rose, and we have come to worship him.“

When King Herod heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.  (Hey, when this very evil and murderous king was troubled, the people of Jerusalem knew something awful was about to happen.)

Herod to the chief priests and scribes: “Where is the Messiah to be born?“

The scribes, after searching the scriptures, “Bethlehem, for the prophet Micah says, ‘But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah (“fruitful”), who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for Me one who is to be Ruler/Shepherd  in Israel.'”

Herod, “Call in those Magi fellows!”

Herod to the Magi, “When, your highnesses, did you first see that “Star” appear?”

Magi, “Oh, about two years ago now.  It’s been a long and dusty road…”

Herod, “Yes, yes, I know. Okay, go towards Bethlehem, and when you find this… this new king, come back and tell me where he is so I can come and KI—, er, I mean, so I can come and worship him too.”

The Magi left, and were exceedingly glad when they found the HOUSE where they saw the child with his mother, Mary.  “They fell down and worshiped Him. Then, they opened their treasures and gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

THEN… after God warned them in a dream NOT to go back to Jerusalem and the mad Herod, they left Jesus and his family to return to their own country … by another route.

God also warned Joseph in a dream that it was NO LONGER SAFE in Bethlehem, and to flee with his family to Egypt.  Whew!  It was a good thing that those Magi had brought gifts.  That would help to support the family on the run and to settle them in Egypt for a few years.  They left that night as well.

King Herod waited.  And waited.  After a week, or maybe a month, he realized the Magi were NOT coming back to tell him where this new “king” was living.  In a rage, he ordered that all the boy babies two years old and under in Bethlehem were to be destroyed. 

And so, in Bethlehem, homes were torn open and soldiers carrying swords and daggers burst in, grabbing any baby boy or toddler, and slashing him to death, splashing blood everywhere.  Mothers, fathers, grandparents, and other children wailed, screamed, and wept for the murdered children.  

“A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and loud lamentation,

Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be comforted,

because they are no more.” Jeremiah 31:15.

And King Herod, the madman, reclined on his bed, confident he’d taken care of the Jewish king problem.

A few years later, Herod was dead too, his rule divided among his three wicked sons.

God then “called His Son out of Egypt,” through a dream He gave to Joseph.  The family returned to Israel, but didn’t stop in Bethlehem, for a new king was now in Jerusalem, Archelaus, as wicked as his father.  As in Luke’s gospel, they returned home to Nazareth. And so, Jesus would be known as “the Nazarene.”

A NEW MONTH – THE NEW TESTAMENT!

Day 275 – Reading – Matthew 1 and Luke 2

Read and believe in Jesus!

MATTHEW.

Yes! Read the genealogy!  (Don’t worry about pronunciation.) 

If you’ve been with me in the Old Testament study, you will recognize some names. (Most recently, Jechoniah/Jehoiachin [the king who surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar and was later honored] and Zerubbabel.)  Also, there are FOUR women mentioned, three by name. (Can you find them?)  THIS genealogy is the history of Joseph, Mary’s husband, and the stepfather of Jesus.  It traces the ROYAL line and places Jesus firmly in the kingly heritage of King David, as God promised this “man after His heart.”

(Luke’s genealogy traces Jesus’ lineage through another son of King David, Nathan (not the prophet), down to Mary, which avoids the curse on the later kings of Judah).

Matthew 1.

The genealogy of Jesus Christ from Abraham down, through King Solomon to Jesus’ stepfather, Joseph.  

Matthew also gives us a glimpse of the man, Joseph, who is called a “just man.”  When he learned/SAW that his fiancée, Mary, was pregnant and knew the baby was NOT his, Joseph had the right by Jewish Law to either have her “stoned to death” or divorce her.  He loved Mary, so he decided to divorce her quietly. 

Had Mary told him the story of Gabriel’s announcement? Did he not believe her? Was it too outlandish?

But before he could start proceedings, the angel of the Lord (Gabriel?) appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph! son of David! Do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus (Savior), for He will save His people from their sins.

This fulfilled what the LORD had spoken to the prophet Isaiah, that “the virgin shall conceive and bear a son” (Isaiah 7:14), and “they will call Him Immanuel, or ‘God with us.'” (Isaiah 8:8, 10)

So, the “just, but obedient” man, Joseph, did as the angel commanded and married the pregnant Mary.  But they stayed apart, intimately, until after she gave birth. 

Oh, and they did call the baby JESUS, as the angel told Joseph.

Luke 2.

This is the most familiar account of the birth of Jesus, with portions of it printed on many Christmas cards each year.  So often is it read in December that many of us could recite the 20 verses by heart. (Our son, a 6th grader at the time, did just that for Bible reading at our church one Christmas Sunday.).

Old Caesar Augustus thought it a good idea to “register” everyone in the Roman Empire. He commanded “all the world” to go to their ancestral town and be counted. It was primarily to register young Roman men for the draft.  Formerly, Israel had been exempt from a census because Jewish men did not serve in the Roman army. But this census (to be repeated every 14 years) would also enable Augustus to levy poll taxes on everyone.

So, as we’ve seen in the genealogies, Joseph was in the line of David, so he had to travel the 70 miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem, David’s ancestral home. The same with Mary.

But … Mary’s due date was only days away!  Nevertheless, they traveled with a large family group to Bethlehem.  (Of course, we KNOW this was to fulfill prophecy about where the Messiah would be born. (Micah 5:2).  

They walked (or rode) and arrived in a completely packed town. Mary started having contractions.  The only private place was where they kept the animals, so Joseph booked it. Mary started labor as the animals looked on.

In hours, Jesus, the Son of God, the Savior of the World, the second Person of the Holy Trinity, was pushed out into a hostile world which would, in a mere 33 years, horrifically kill Him. But for now, He was held safely in warm swaddling cloths, close to Mary’s breast. Later, he was placed in a straw-filled, stone feed trough while Mary slept.

So many prophecies fulfilled.  So many more to be fulfilled. God’s plan of salvation had begun.

Meanwhile, those shepherds outside Bethlehem got a FIVE-STAR show in the midnight sky.  First,  an angel appeared in lightning brightness with a heavenly birth announcement.

“FEAR NOT! For behold, I bring you Good News of great joy for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ (Messiah), the Lord.” 

The angel went on to tell the shepherds HOW they would recognize this Savior-Messiah. “You will find the baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger …. YES, a manger.”

Then that glorious, brilliant, light and song of a million angels began. “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased.”

Then a silence and blackness.  It took the shepherds a few minutes for their hearts to slow, their vision and hearing to return.  They looked at each other. “Did you…?” “Yes!” “The Messiah…?”  “I KNOW!”  And then, the agreed, “Let’s go!”   And forsaking their sheep (sleeping through it all, no doubt), and ran as one towards Bethlehem.  The star – Yes, THAT star – pointed to the stable.  AND THEY FOUND HIM just as they’d been told. 

When the excitement ended, and the now-awake Jesus was shown around, the shepherds told the young family about the angels, the announcement, and the glorious singing.  Mary, eyes large as saucers, “treasured up all these things in her heart.”

Eventually, the shepherds left, but they weren’t finished.  They went back glorifying and praising God, and sharing all they had heard and seen with everyone they met.

Eight days later, as per the Law of Moses, baby Jesus was circumcised as a sign he was a Son of the Covenant (a Jew). At that time, He also officially got his name, Jesus. 

Forty days after his birthday, Mary and Joseph, again according to the Law of Moses, went to the temple to present (and redeem) Jesus, and to offer the sacrifice of 2 doves to show that the purification of Mary had been completed.  (Only then could her marriage to Joseph be consummated.)

While they were there, they met two elderly senior citizens: the righteous and devout Simeon, and the godly, widowed praying prophetess, Anna.  Both had been waiting a lifetime for that day….. the day they would see the Messiah of Israel. 

Simeon took the baby in his arms and prophesied over him.

“My eyes, Lord, have seen Your salvation that You have prepared in the presence of all peoples,

a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.”

Simeon handed back Jesus and said with a sweet sigh, “Now I can depart in peace.”

After seeing Jesus, Anna began to give thanks to God and to speak of Him to all who were waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.

(Luke here omits the visit from the Eastern Kings, and the family’s hurried trip to and stay in Egypt.)

He tells of them going back to Nazareth, and Jesus growing strong and filled with wisdom. His parents also saw God’s favor on Him.

Luke then fast-forwards to when Jesus was twelve and the family made the annual trip to Jerusalem for Passover.  After the feast days, they returned, but later discovered that Jesus was nowhere to be found.  His parents hurried back to Jerusalem and searched high and low for the boy. 

Yes, they found him and were both relieved and angry. 

He was at the Temple conversing with the Teachers of the Law (scribes and Pharisees). He was asking and answering questions about the Law, and these learned men were amazed at His wisdom.

Mary scolded Him (hopefully not in front of the Teachers, for at 12, He was considered a man).

Jesus answered that He was in His Father’s House.  Whoa, a slight that Joseph, whom He obeyed and respected, was NOT His true Father.

“What….?” they answered. (More stuff for Mary to ponder in her heart.)

But Jesus obediently returned to Nazareth with them.  And He continued to grow in wisdom, stature, and in favor with God and man  (….for 18 more years).

A NEW MONTH – THE NEW TESTAMENT!

Day 274 – Reading – Luke 1 and John 1

Read and believe in Jesus!

LUKE

This “orderly account” of Jesus, and the continuing story in Acts of the early church, was written by Dr. Luke, who was a believing Gentile, to an educated Greek colleague, Theophilus.

Luke carefully interviewed many “eye-witnesses and ministers of the word” before writing his account of Jesus.  He seems to follow Mark’s order of events, who, in turn, gathered events and stories from the disciple Peter while they served together.  And of course, this Gospel is “inspired by the Holy Spirit of God.”

Luke 1

Dr Luke begins where Malachi left off, announcing the one who would “prepare the way” for the coming Messiah.  That promise of God continues here – 400 years later – with a righteous old priest named Zechariah and his equally aged and godly wife, Elizabeth, who were about to be fantastically surprised.

As the annual priestly order came around, Zechariah got his turn to serve at the Temple. Then, by lot, he was chosen to actually enter the Holy Place to light new incense at the Altar of Incense, which stood just before the veil separating him from the Most Holy Place and the Ark of the Covenant.

Was he nervous about this once-in-a-lifetime privilege?  You can be sure!  So when the archangel, Gabriel, appeared, he probably nearly had a heart attack.

“Don’t be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayers have been heard. You and Elizabeth will have a son, and you will call him John.  You’ll have a lot of joy at his birth, for he will be great before the LORD.”  Then Gabriel went on to basically quote Malachi’s prophecy.

Did Zechariah fall to his knees and praise God?  Nope.  A bit of unbelief oozed out. 

“How will this happen? I’m old and so is my wife.”  (In his mind, he was saying, ‘It ain’t gonna happen, angel.’)

Gabriel straightens himself to great angel height and proclaims to the doubting priest, “I AM GABRIEL. I STAND IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD!  (Whoa!)  I was sent to you with this good news.”

And as a reprimand for his unbelief, Gabriel tells Zechariah he will be mute until the day John is born.

Meanwhile, outside, the people are wondering about the priest.  It shouldn’t take THAT long to change the incense.  Then. when Zechariah comes out, they realize he has seen a vision. (A vision from God!! Could it really be happening after so long???)  But, well darn, the priest can’t say a word about his experience!

Somehow, he informs his wife, and she soon conceives.  She keeps silent about it (like Zechariah) for five entire months (and then she is definitely “showing.”)

Flash to Nazareth.

Gabriel is once again sent to earth by God with good news.  This time, he does not appear in the Holy Place of the Temple in Jerusalem, but to a young woman in a small town with a bad reputation. To Mary, the girl God has chosen to bear His Son, to bring the second member of the Holy Trinity into the world as a human.  Wow!  What a privilege!  What a responsibility!

“Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!” said Gabriel to Mary. “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name, Jesus.”  

Gabriel tells her how Jesus will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. How He will receive the throne of David and reign forever over Israel.  And how His kingdom will last forever.

Did Mary know all the scriptures he quoted?  Did she even know she was in the royal line of King David?  The young girl had seen and did know how lambs and goats were conceived, so she asked  “How will this happen, since I am a virgin?”

Then that mind-blowing news!  “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.  Therefore, the child to be born will be called holy. He will be the SON OF GOD.

And as Mary was trying to comprehend this in her young mind, Gabriel gave her news that she COULD understand.  Her cousin Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy with a son. 

Wow, Mary thought. Elizabeth is as old as my grandmother. If God can make THAT happen to her, then He can make THIS happen to me.  

 Gabriel smiled at her and agreed. “Nothing is impossible with God.”

“Okay, I’m in!” said Mary.  (Actually…”Behold, I’m the servant of the Lord. Let it be as you said.”)

Flash to another hillside town in Judah near Jerusalem.

(Mary had travelled miles south to spend the first three months of her own pregnancy with her aged cousin.  Both could support the other in this very new and extraordinary happening.)

“Greetings, Elizabeth!” Mary called as she entered the old priest’s home.  

“Oh!” Elizabeth said as she felt baby John leap for joy in her womb. 

“Oh, Mary!  Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Blessed am I that the mother of my Lord should come to me!”  Then, the two women – young and old – embraced each other.

And Mary burst out in a song of praise to the Lord. She praised His might, holiness, strength, and mercy.

Mary remained with Elizabeth until it was time for her cousin to give birth. Then she returned to Nazareth, now that her tiny infant “Son of God” was firmly nestled in her womb.  (She would make that long trip again in a mere six months, heavily pregnant, to another hillside town, Bethlehem.)

JOHN IS BORN!! Hallelujah! Praise God!

“You’ll call him Zechariah, right?” they asked Elizabeth.

“No, he shall be called John.”

Turning to Zechariah, they poo-pooed his wife’s announcement, “The baby is Zechariah Junior, right?”

The old and very proud priest called for a writing tablet and wrote (in huge Hebrew), His name is JOHN.” 

And immediately his voice returned, and he raised his praises to God in a magnificent prophecy about his son, about the Messiah, salvation, mercy, forgiveness of sin, and a Light to all who sit in darkness and the shadow of death.

And John grew and became strong in spirit.  He lived in the wilderness until the day of his public announcement to Israel.  (No, John did not become a priest, as he could have, but a Herald of Israel’s Messiah King!)

JOHN

This last Gospel is written by the disciple John (“whom Jesus loved”).  He wrote his Gospel in his old age, while he was serving in Ephesus (and after the destruction of Jerusalem).

He was aware of the other three Gospels and wanted his to be more about the “spiritual” and “theological” aspects of Jesus’ life and ministry. He presents Jesus as the Son of God and proves that claim with eight “signs” or proofs.  His very purpose in writing his Gospel is so we would BELIEVE in Him as the Son of God and have ETERNAL LIFE 

John was inspired by the Holy Spirit as he gave his unique eyewitness accounts.

John 1.

John begins his story of Jesus in chapter one, WAY before the announcement of His coming birth to Mary and then the Shepherds, even before Genesis 3:15, which was the first announcement of a coming Savior after Adam and Eve’s fall. 

John begins in “Eternity Past” and reveals Jesus as God, the creator of everything that exists. “He was WITH God and He WAS God.”

He also mentions John’s appearance as a witness to Jesus’ earthly human ministry. 

(BY THE WAY, every time John is mentioned in this Gospel, it is speaking of John the Baptist.)

John further calls Jesus “The Light,” as opposed to the Darkness of Satan, sin, and death.

Jesus came to his own – the Jewish nation – but they did NOT receive him. (Jews always first, even in Paul’s ministry.)  But after that, to ALL WHO BELIEVED IN HIS NAME, He gave the right (even Gentiles) to be His own “Children of God” who were born of the Spirit.

Then another mention of John the Baptist, who said of Jesus, “He who comes after me ranks before me because He WAS before me.”

Then he gives John’s testimony. Men sent from the elders of Jerusalem asked him who he was, Christ? Elijah? the Prophet? No, no, and no, answered the Baptist. He was just the one sent, “crying in the wilderness.”  He was making the path straight for the Lord.

They asked the Baptist why he was baptizing. John said he was preparing hearts to meet the Messiah, washing with water.  But when HE, the “worthy One,” came, He would baptize with fire.  And then John saw him and proclaimed, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”

Then he told how God told him he would KNOW the Anointed One. John would see the Spirit descend from heaven on Him.  And he saw that with Jesus.  “I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God.”

John even started directing his own disciples to follow Jesus, the Lamb of God.  One of those was Andrew.  After meeting Jesus, he went and told his brother Peter about him, and Peter came to see him too.

The next day Philip followed Him. Philip then found Nathaniel and told him they’d found the Messiah.  Soon, Nathaniel followed Jesus wholeheartedly as well.  “You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!

Day 263 – Reading – Zechariah 1 – 4.

Read the Scriptures first. Do you like reading prophetic visions?  

Today begins three days in the book of Zechariah.  Remember in Ezra 5:1-2, God sent two prophets, Haggai and Zechariah, to get the Jews off their recliners and back to work to finish rebuilding the Temple. He was in a priestly line, born in Babylon and raised by his priest-grandfather, Iddo. He’s described as a “young man” in Zechariah 2:4, so he was probably younger than Haggai and hadn’t begun his priestly duties (age 30).  According to Matthew 23:35, he was murdered between the temple and the altar!

Not only did Zechariah challenge the Jews to complete the Temple rebuild, but he went on to encourage them concerning their Messiah and His glorious kingdom and new Temple in the future. 

In each of his three main prophesies, Zechariah begins with the present situation in Judah and goes forward to the exaltation of the Messiah’s reign.  It is sometimes called “the apocalypse of the Old Testament.”

God used Zechariah to bring an outburst of promise for the future to sustain the faithful remnant through the coming 400 “silent years” when no word from God was heard until John the Baptist’s words announcing “the Lamb of God.”

(I think it’s cool that Israel was in Egypt for 400 years, until they killed the Passover Lamb.  And soon there would be another 400 dark years until they heard the announcement of (and killed) Jesus, “the Lamb of God.”  See Mark 1:1-11)

Zechariah 1.

“‘Return to me, and I will return to you,’ says the LORD.” were Zechariah’s first words. And the people repented. Then Zechariah gave these two visions for the comfort of the exiles.

  • 1.)  In the night, Zechariah “saw” a Man/angel among the myrtle trees, and 3 other riders of colored horses.  These men on horses patrolled the earth, and discovered all the nations (Gentiles) were at ease/rest, while Jerusalem & Zion lay in disaster.
  • The Man/angel then told Zechariah and the Jews these gracious and comforting words from the LORD.
  • “I have returned to Jerusalem with mercy; my house shall be built in it, and the measuring line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem (the walls were finished 75 years later).  My cities shall again overflow with prosperity, and the LORD will again comfort Zion and again “choose Jerusalem.” (during the Millennial Kingdom.)

 

  • 2.) Next, Zechariah “saw” four horns! He asked what they represented. 
  • The angel said they were “the horns (or powers) that scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.” (Maybe the four who attacked Israel: Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, and Persia, but most likely the four world empires of Daniel 2:7: Babylon, Persia, Greece & Rome.)
  • Then Zechariah “saw” four craftsmen (“hammers”), and asked the angel/man what these were coming to do.
  • The angel said, “These have come to terrify the “horns” that scattered Judah. The craftsmen will terrify them and cast them down.“

Zechariah 2.

  • 3.)  Next, the prophet “sees” a man with a measuring line, and he asks the man where he’s going and what he’s planning to do.
  • “To measure Jerusalem, to see what is its width and length.”  The angel/man then sends a runner after the measuring man to tell him that the future Jerusalem will have NO WALL. The LORD will be a “wall of fire” all around the city, AND He will also be the Glory in her midst.

Then Zechariah comes back to the present with a message to the Jews still remaining in Babylon.  “Up! Up! Flee from the land of the north, declares the LORD.  Up! Escape to Zion, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon, who plundered you.  For he who touches you touches the apple of His (God’s) eye. I will shake my hand over them, and they (captors) shall become the plunder for those who served them.”

  • Then Zechariah again resorts to the distant future when the LORD will dwell in Zion, and many nations shall join themselves to the LORD and also be His people.  He will dwell in their midst, in “the holy land.”  He will again “choose Jerusalem.”  So, “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion!”

Zechariah 3.

This next vision reveals the need for Israel’s cleansing and restoration as a priestly nation.

  • 4.)  The LORD showed Zechariah the High Priest Jeshua, standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand (God’s or Jeshua’s?) to ACCUSE HIM.  This is symbolic. Jeshua stands in for Israel as a whole. Will he be rejected or accepted? 
  • The LORD rebukes Satan for his accusation. He tells the enemy that He has snatched him (Jeshua/Israel) out of the fire of destruction/exile, like a stick about to burn. 
  • Satan fires back, pointing out Jeshua’s filthy garments (Israel’s sin). 
  • The LORD commands that the filthy garments be removed from Jeshua. Then He says to the priest representing all of Israel, “Behold, I have taken your iniquity away from you, and I will clothe you with pure vestments.”

(This is righteousness imputed, as God does to those who believe in Jesus, the Christ.  Nothing that they/we do can make us clean. God changes our filthiness to purity and glory, and the ability now to serve Him.)

  • Then, Zechariah joins the scene and reminds them to put a clean turban on Jeshua’s head.  The priestly turban, inscribed “Holy to the LORD,” is placed on Jeshua’s head.
  • The LORD of Hosts then charges Jeshua, “If you will walk in my ways and keep my charge, then you shall rule my house and have charge of my courts, and I will give you the right of access with those who stand here.” (Access to God’s throne room through offerings and prayer.)  “And behold, I will bring my servant, “the Branch.” (Jeremiah 23:5-6)  I will remove the iniquity of this land in a single day. “

Zechariah 4.

  • 5.) The angel/man came again to Zechariah and showed him a lampstand, all of gold. It had a bowl on top and seven lamps.  There were two olive trees by it, on the right and left, which supplied a continual flow of oil to burn.
  • Then the angel/man gave a message from the LORD to Zerubbabel. “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the LORD of hosts.” He was speaking of the task of finishing the rebuilding of the Temple. 
  • “Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain.  And he shall bring forward the “top stone” (finishing stone of the temple) amid shouts of “Grace, grace to it!” The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall complete it!”

(And it WAS completed 6 years later.)

  • Zechariah asked about the two olive trees on either side of the lampstand with pipes to pour in the oil.
  • “Do you know what these represent?” asked the angel/man.
  • “No, my lord,” said Zechariah.
  • “These are the “anointed ones” who stand by the LORD of the whole earth.” 

Who were anointed to serve in Israel?  The king and the priest.  Representing these two offices (for the returned exiles) through which the blessing of God would flow were Zerubbabel, descended from the royal line, and Jeshua, from the priestly line.  Both together foreshadowed the Messiah, as priest and king.

****LORD, thank you for all the imagery in this section, especially the courtroom scene where Jeshua stood before You, clothed in filthy garments.  This is like all the people of the world, sinners in need of cleansing.  Then YOU took off the dirty clothes and put on clean ones. YOU, not Jeshua. And you gave him access to YOU! 

 This is such a beautiful picture of what Jesus did for all who believe in Him.  Just like 2 Corinthians 5:21 says. “For our sake, He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him, we might become the righteousness of God.”  Thank you, oh, thank you!

Day 258 – Reading – Daniel 7 – 9

Read the Scriptures.  Meditate on what the prophet is saying.

Day 258.  Daniel 7.

In the following three (6) giantchapters are the prophetic visions that Daniel had of the near and distant future. They are hard to understand, but with some help, we can gain a little knowledge.

This prophetic vision backtracks to the time of Belshazzar, the Babylonian king.  This time, Daniel had a dream, and in the morning, he wrote down the dream and the “sum” of it.

He saw four huge beasts emerge from the sea. 

  • One was like a lion with wings.  The wings were plucked off, and it was lifted up to stand on two feet. It was given the mind of a man.
  • The second beast was like a bear. It had three ribs in its mouth.  It was told to go and devour much flesh.
  • The third beast was like a leopard with four wings on its back.  It also had four heads. Dominion was given to it.
  • Then, Daniel saw a fourth beast, terrifying and dreadful and exceedingly strong.  It had great iron teeth, and it devoured, broke in pieces, and stamped what was left with its feet.  It had ten horns. Then a little horn grew up and plucked out three of the horns by the roots.  And this little horn had the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.

Whoa!

These four beasts represent the same empires that Nebuchadnezzar’s dream-statue portrayed. The “sea” that they emerged from is the Mediterranean Sea (area).

  • The lion with wings represents Babylon. (Images of these were carved into the city gates.)
  • The bear is Medo-Persia, with the ribs representing all its vanquished nations.
  • The leopard represents Greece. The four heads represent the four generals who divided the kingdom after Alexander the Great died. (Macedonia, Asia Minor, Syria, and Egypt)
  • The fourth beast represents the Roman Empire. Its dominion fell apart, but it will be revived and returned to greatness near Christ’s second coming. It will consist of 10 parts ruled by 10 kings, then a final 11th king who will be Antichrist.

Daniel’s vision then goes forward to when the Ancient of Days will give judgment on him, and Christ will destroy him.  And glory and dominion will then be given to the King of Kings.

More details are then given about these end times, including the 3.5 years of great tribulation.

And Daniel?  Whoa. His thoughts greatly alarmed him, he paled, but he kept the matter in his heart.

Daniel 8.

The next dream that Daniel had was while Belshazzar was still king. 

He saw a ram on the bank of a Canal. It had two tall horns, but one was taller.  He charged westward, northward, and southward. No beast could stand before him. He did as he pleased and became great.

Then a male goat came from the west across the face of the earth, without touching the ground.  It had a prominent horn between its eyes.  It came to the ram on the bank of the canal and ran at it.  The goat struck and broke the ram’s two horns, so it had no more power. The goat trampled the ram, and it died.  The goat then became exceedingly great.

But when it was great, the big horn was broken, and there came up four smaller horns facing the four winds. ONE of the horns grew really great, even to the stars. It faced “the Glorious Land.” And the burnt offerings and sanctuary were given to him for 2,300 days.

Okay, whoa again.

Then he heard a voice from heaven. “Gabriel, make this man understand the vision.”  And Gabriel told Daniel that this vision was for the time of the End, and Daniel was told to “seal it up.” 

First came the ram (Persia) and the goat (Greece) and the divided parts, one of whose leaders became Antiochus Epiphanes, who was then mirrored in the Antichrist, who would be in power for 6 1/3 years: the tribulation and Great Tribulation.

 “I, Daniel, was overcome and lay sick for some days. Then I rose and went about the king’s business, but I was appalled by the vision, and did not understand it.”   (We didn’t either, Daniel!)

Daniel 9.

Now we jump forward until after the defeat of Babylon, in the first year that Darius is reigning as king over the Chaldeans.

Daniel was reading in the books of Israel, and read in the book of the prophet Jeremiah, that 70 years would pass after the destruction of Jerusalem for Judah to be in exile.  The end of those 70 years was near, so Daniel began to pray.

Such a long, heart-felt prayer of confession, and adoration, and petition!!  (Oh, read the whole prayer several times!)

O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keeps His commandments, we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from Your commandments and rules.

We have not listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name …  To you, O Lord, belongs righteousness, but to us open shame … because of the treachery that they have committed against you.  To us, O LORD belongs open shame … because we have sinned against You. To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against Him and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God. 

And the curse and oath that are written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out upon us, because we have sinned against him. He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us… by bringing about this great calamity.

Yet we have not entreated the favor of the LORD our god. We have not turned from our iniquities and gained insight by your truth. We have not obeyed… We have sinned, we have done wickedly.

O Lord, according to all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, your Holy hill, because, for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers. Jerusalem and your people have become a byword among all who are around us!

Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his pleas for mercy, and for Your own sake, O Lord, make your face to shine upon your sanctuary, which is desolate.

O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and see our desolations, and the city that is called by Your name. For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy.

O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive, O Lord, pay attention and act.

Delay not, for Your own sake, O my God, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name.

And while he was praying, confessing his sin and the sin of his people Israel, and presenting his plea before the LORD for the holy hill of God… while he was speaking, the man, Gabriel came to him. 

“O Daniel, I have now come out to give you insight and understanding. At the beginning of your pleas for mercy, a word went out, and I have come to tell it to you (for you are greatly loved) understanding of the vision.

It was not just 70 years, but 470 years about the people and the holy city, when God would put an end to sin and atone for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness. 

And he gives Danial more specific amounts of time until “the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”

(WOW. What a prayer. Oh, to pray that way for myself and others, my fellow believers and the unsaved!!)

Day 222 – Reading Jeremiah 10 – 13

Day 223 – Reading – Jeremiah 14 – 17

Read today’s Scriptures … ANYWHERE you find yourself this summer. Stay in the WORD!

DAY 222 – Jeremiah 10 – 13.

In this book, Jeremiah prophesies God’s coming judgment on Judah for their unrepentant sin, often in horrifying detail.  He also foretells their return to the land and the final millennial restoration under the rule of the Messiah-King.  Jeremiah and/or the people pray for mercy, but God’s answer is mostly “Do not pray for them.” (In other words, God’s mind was made up. They had gone too long without remorse. Judgment WILL come.

Also, in Jeremiah, there are sections where God speaks directly to Jeremiah, telling him to do something, which is often a “picture” of what will happen to Judah.  Some instructions are difficult, as when the LORD told Jeremiah he was NOT to take a wife or have children.  Farther along in the book, Jeremiah will endure much suffering for the Word of the LORD’s sake.

Jeremiah 10.

The prophet compares the ultimate LORD God with the idols of the nations.

IDOLS:  “A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe BY THE HANDS OF A CRAFTSMAN. They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it cannot move. Their idols are like SCARECROWS IN A CUCUMBER FIELD!  They cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk!  DO NOT BE AFRAID OF THEM!  They cannot do evil… OR good!

THE LORD;  “There is none like you, O LORD: You are great, and your name is great in might.  Who would not fear you, O King of the nations? For this is your due; for among all the wise ones of the nations and in all their kingdoms, THERE IS NONE LIKE YOU!”

IDOLS:  “They are both stupid and foolish; the instruction of idols is but WOOD!  Beaten silver… and gold…  They are the work of the craftsman and of the hands of the goldsmith; their “clothing” is violet and purple; they are ALL THE WORK OF SKILLED MEN!”

THE LORD:  “BUT THE LORD is the true God; He is the living God and the everlasting King.  At HIS wrath the earth shakes, and the nations cannot endure His indignation.”

Jeremiah then shifts into the words the Israelites will speak when the invaders attack – their despair over their homes destroyed and their children killed.

In ending the chapter, Jeremiah pleads that God’s terrible fury would be poured out on the attackers. He understood Judah must be punished, but prayed for mercy and moderation for them.

Jeremiah 11.

God tells Jeremiah to remind the people of the “Covenant” He made with them when he brought them out of the “iron furnace of Egypt;” the blessings and curses He would bring depending on how they obeyed His law.   They had confirmed that, but had quickly strayed from their promise.  “Everyone walked in the stubbornness of his evil heart.”  Hence, the coming disaster that they cannot escape.

“Let them go and cry to the gods to whom they make offerings.”

And to Jeremiah, “Do NOT pray for this people, or lift up a cry or prayer on their behalf, for I will not listen when they call to me in the time of their trouble!”  WOW!

Jeremiah continued to tell the people of God’s fierce judgment.  Some men from the Levite town of Anathoth devised schemes to kill him for his prophesy. Jeremiah went to the LORD.   God assured Jeremiah that they would  “get theirs” when when the time came. “Behold I will punish them. I will bring disaster on the men of Anathoth.” 

(Also re-read God’s strong promise to Jeremiah in chapter 1:8, 17-18)

Jeremiah 12.

In this chapter, Jeremiah complains about the wicked and treacherous prospering. (Maybe about those who had threaten him.)

God answers Jeremiah by listing all the ways that Judah has failed HIM, forsaken and hated HIM, destroyed HIS vineyard and pleasant land…

Jeremiah 13.

In this chapter, God gives Jeremiah a weird task to do, one that, if taken literally, involves a LONG TRIP.  Jeremiah is to buy a linen loincloth (equivalent of a pair of underwear) and put it on, but not to take it off to wash it. 

Jeremiah obeyed.

Then God told him to go to the Euphrates River (500 miles away!!), dig a hole and hide it there between some rocks. 

Jeremiah obeyed.

After many days, the LORD told him to go back to the Euphrates and dig up the loincloth.

Jeremiah obeyed, and reported that the loincloth was “spoiled” and “good for nothing.” 

WEIRD set of instructions, right?  But God said it illustrated how close Israel had been to Him, that they were His people and He, their God.  But they would not remain there, but stubbornly followed after other gods to worship them.  And so…. the prophesied long stay, “buried” so to speak in Babylon, was to spoil their pride.

Next, Jeremiah is to tell ALL the people, from the king who sits on the throne (Jehoiachin), the priests, and prophets, to the common inhabitants of Jerusalem, that they will be like “full wine jars” which will be dashed against each other and destroyed … when the invasion comes. 

When they all ask, “Why is this coming upon us?” tell them that it is “for the greatness of your iniquity” and “you have forgotten God and trusted in lies.”

Then God asks a question that goes back to the Illustration of the loincloth. “WOE to you, O Jerusalem! How long will it be before you are made clean?”

DAY 223 – Jeremiah 14 – 17.

Jeremiah 14.

In a time of drought in Judah, Jeremiah pleads for mercy.  After stating how horrible it’s getting without water, he prays to God.

“O You, Hope of Israel, its Savior in time of trouble….”  Don’t be a stranger in a time of trouble.  “You, O LORD, are in the midst of us, and we are called by your name;  Do not leave us.”

But the LORD answered Jeremiah like this,

“Do not pray for the welfare of this people! Though they fast, I will not hear their cry, and though they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them.  But I will consume them by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.” 

WHOA!  How does it feel for God to say NOT to pray for someone?

Jeremiah pleads for the people, because false prophets have deceived them.  But God says HE did not send those prophets, and they will be punished too.  But so will the people.  They would have known that the prophets were false if they’d stayed close to Him.

Still, Jeremiah pleads to God for the people.

“We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, and the iniquity of our fathers, for we have sinned against You. Do not spurn us, for Your name’s sake; do not dishonor Your glorious throne; remember and do not break Your covenant with us.  Are there any among the false gods of the nations THAT CAN BRING RAIN?  Or can the heavens GIVE SHOWERS?  Are You not He, O LORD our God?  We set our hope on You, for You do all these things.”

Wow, what powerful, persevering prayer!!

Jeremiah 15.

God’s answer to Jeremiah’s intercession,

“Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my heart would not turn toward this people. Send them out of my sight, and let them go!

WOW. Double WOW.

God will not relent of the 1) pestilence, 2) sword, 3) famine, and 4) captivity “because of what Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, did in Jerusalem. (2 Kings 21:1-18, 23:26, and 24:3-4)  “I AM weary of relenting.”

Jeremiah goes through a time of self-pity and protests about staying clear of those wicked men and remaining faithful to God. (He truly loved God’s word, a joy and delight to him.) But why wouldn’t God answer his prayers? 

And God reprimanded him.  “If you utter what is precious, and not what is worthless, you will be as My mouth. I will make you, to this people, a fortified wall of bronze; they will fight against you, but you shall prevail, for I am with you to save you and deliver you.”

Jeremiah 16.

When God commands Jeremiah NOT to take a wife or have children, it was a mercy. God reminds His prophet that the wives, sons, and daughters who are there will die of disease but not be buried, they will perish by the sword and famine, and beast will eat their bodies.  God has taken away PEACE from the land. He will silence the voice of mirth and gladness.

When the people ask WHY?, Jeremiah is to tell them, “Because your fathers have forsaken Me and have gone after other gods and have served and worshiped them and have forsaken Me and have not kept my law.  AND YOU HAVE DONE WORSE THAN YOUR FATHERS.  And so…… I will hurl you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your fathers have known.  And there … you shall serve other gods day and night, for I will show you NO FAVOR.

“I will bring them back … But first, I will doubly repay their iniquity and sin … for their detestable idols and for filling my land with their abominations.

Jeremiah 17.

God continues listing the reasons for such drastic judgment on Judah.

CURSED is the man who trusts in man … he’s like a shrub in the parched desert.

BLESSED is the man who trusts in the LORD … he’s like a man planted by the water, green and fruitful.

“I the LORD search the heart and the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.

Then the LORD sends Jeremiah to the kings of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem to tell them to KEEP THE SABBATH HOLY. This had been a major sin for Israel, for all the 490 years from the first king until their captivity.  Not only had they neglected and desecrated the Sabbath Day, they had ignored the Sabbath Year.  Their 70 years of captivity would give the land rest for all those Sabbath Years they had missed.  (When they did return from captivity, special emphasis was put on observing Sabbath.)

(We saw Jeremiah as a “human” today as well as a faithful prophet.  He balked at a few of God’s judgments and prayed to change them, but in the end, he relented.  He obey strange and dangerous instructions and got harassed and persecuted for them.  But God promised He would always be with Jeremiah.  Jeremiah was faithful to give out God’s message.  HOW faithful am I?)

Day 196 – Reading – 2 Chronicles 28 and 2 Kings 16 – 17

Read today’s Scriptures.  Do you see connections?

2 Chronicles 28 and 2 Kings 16.

Both chapters are about King Ahaz in Judah (south).  While the next-to-the-last king (Pekah) was reigning in Israel, Ahaz too the throne in Judah.  He was 20 and reigned for 16 years.  He DID NOT DO WHAT WAS RIGHT IN THE EYES OF HIS GOD, AS HIS “FATHER” DAVID HAD DONE.  Ahaz imitated the kings in the north. He even burned his sons as offerings like the nations God had helped them to drive out. 

“He sacrificed and made offerings on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree.” 

The King of Syria and King Pekah of Israel (former enemies) got together and came against Judah. Together, this force killed hundreds of thousands of Judahites and carried many away captive, and took a lot of spoil. 

But Obed, a prophet of the LORD, was in Samaria and went out to meet the returning army.   

  • “Because the LORD, the God of your fathers, was angry with Judah, he gave them into your hand, but you have killed them in a rage that has reached up to heaven. And NOW you intend to subjugate the people of Judah and Jerusalem, male and female, AS YOUR SLAVES. Have you not sins of your own against the LORD your God?”
  • “Now hear me and SEND BACK THE CAPTIVES FROM YOUR RELATIVES WHOM YOU HAVE TAKEN, for fierce wrath of the LORD is upon you.”  And certain of the chief men of Israel agreed with Obed.

Along with the people of Israel, the Edomites and Philistines invaded and defeated Judah. (The Lord was humbling them because of evil King Ahaz.)

So…. instead of repenting and asking God for help, King Ahaz sent to the King of Assyria for help!!!  Are you kidding?  That would be like the U.S. sending and asking the terror group, Hamas, for help with a few raids. You can tell how far away from God he was.

Ahaz took the silver and gold he found in the house of the LORD and i the treasures of the king’s house, and sent it as a present to the King of Assyria.   The Assyrian King listened to Ahaz (and had plans of his own), so he marched to Damascus, killed King Rezin, and took captives. (A nice deal!)

But…. the insane Judean King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-Pileser, the Assyrian king.  And there, King Ahaz SAW the pagan altar that was there.  He decided THAT god must be powerful to have defeated him, so he sent “a model” to Uriah the priest, with all the details.  And Uriah built the altar before Ahaz got back from Damascus. 

The great Bronze Altar, which was before the Temple of the LORD, was removed, and this pagan altar was put in its place!!!!!!!  Ahaz commanded Uriah to burn offerings on it morning and night, and throw on it all the blood of the sacrifices.  (Ahaz claimed that the god of Damascus was more powerful than the LORD. After all, it had defeated him!)

Ahaz also desecrated the other items outside the Temple. And he cut the vessels into pieces, and shut the doors of the temple. And in every city of Judah, he made offerings to other gods … PROVOKING TO ANGER THE LORD, THE GOD OF HIS FATHERS.   (NO WONDER God destroyed Jerusalem and took the people into captivity!)

And Ahaz died (thank God!) and his son, Hezekiah, reigned in his place. King Hezekiah DID WHAT WAS RIGHT IN THE EYES OF THE LORD! 

(How he could have been a godly son and escaped the vile acts of his father was only by the protection of God!)

2 Kings 17.

Meanwhile, up north, the Assyrian king, Tiglath-Pilser, came and captured most of the northern area of Israel.  Hoshea (not the prophet) made a conspiracy against King Pekah (inspired by the Assyrian?), and killed him. Hoshea reigned in his place.  Hoshea was the LAST king of Israel.  He reigned nine years and was EVIL in God’s sight.

The NEXT king of Assyria, Shalmaneser, came against him and made him pay tribute. But Hoshea sent to the Egyptian Pharaoh and offered the tribute money, if he’d come and fight the Assyrian king.

REALLY??? Was Hoshea nuts?

Shalmaneser learned of it and threw the king into prison. Then he came south and besieged Samaria, the capital of the northern kingdom. After three years he captured it and carried the Israelites to Assyria. He spread them out in the cities of the Medes, even as far as Susa, where the book of Esther is set.. 

They never returned to the promised land.

God did what He said in Deuteronomy 28.   God’s word is absolutely true, whether for blessing or curse.

Israel’s epitaph:

“This occurred because the people of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt … and had feared other gods and walked in the customs of the nations whom the LORD drove out before the people of Israel, and in the customs that the kings of Israel had practiced. And the people of Israel did SECRETLY against the LORD their God things that were not right…. and they served idols, of which the LORD had said to them, ‘You shall not do this.'”

“YET the LORD warned Israel and Judah by every prophet and every seer, saying, ‘Turn from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes in accordance with all the Law that I commanded your fathers, and that I sent to you by my servants, the prophets.’

  • “But they would not listen…
  • “They despised His statutes and His covenant…
  • “They went after false idols…
  • “They abandoned the commandments of the LORD their God….
  • (They) made images and worshiped the host of heaven…
  • They burned their sons and daughters as offerings..
  • They used divinations and omens…

“Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them out of His sight. NONE was left but the tribe of JUDAH only.

The Assyrians sent other peoples they’d conquered to the land of Israel, to settle in it and keep it from going wild. And to pay him tribute.  These “other” people did not fear the LORD, so He sent LIONS  among them to kill some of them. (Don’t you see that the “land” is precious to God as well?)

The king of Assyria sent back one priest from Samaria (corrupt), to teach these “foreign” peoples the “law of the god of the land.” He settled in Bethel and taught that they should fear the LORD.

But all these people from other nations served their own gods along with the LORD.   AND NOW THE PROMISED LAND WAS ONCE AGAIN FILLED WITH FOREIGN NATIONS!

All Joshua’s work was undone. 

 “So these nations feared the LORD AND also served their carved images. Their children did likewise, and their children’s children, as the fathers did.”

They became the hated Samarians of Jesus’ time, mixing Judaism with paganism.

2024GOAL – Reading Through The Bible Chronologically, day 365 – the last day!

   Day 365—We are in the LAST month of Bible reading for the year, studying THE REVELATION to John.

Day 365 – Revelation 19 – 22 (Rejoicing in Heaven, 1,000 years, Satan defeated, new Heaven/Earth, new Jerusalem, River & Tree of Life, Jesus is coming)

Revelation 19.

“Hallelujah! Salvation, and glory, and power belong to our God, for His judgments are true and just.”

“Praise our God, all you His servants, you who fear Him, small and great.”

“Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give Him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His Bride has made herself ready: it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure.”  Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.”

Then John saw a white horse ridden by One called “Faithful and True.” His eyes are like a flame of fire and on His head are many diadems. He has “a name written that no one knows but Himself.”

He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which He is called is “The Word of God.”  This One will defeat the nations and rule them. He will “tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.”  On his robe and on his thigh, He has a name written, “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.”

And the “armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white a pure” (the saints) were following Him on white horses.

“I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against Him who was sitting on the horse and against His army. The beast was captured, and the false prophet, who in its presence had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the Mark of the Beast and those who worshipped its image.  THESE TWO WERE THROWN ALIVE INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE THAT BURNS WITH SULFER.”

Revelation 20.

Then John saw an angel holding the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. “And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it, and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer.” (Until the thousand years have ended, and he is released for a LITTLE while.)

Then John saw the thousand-year reign of Christ on earth. (It’s when Israel’s promised King will reign on the actual earth from Jerusalem.  (A promise fulfilled to the Jews.)

After that, Satan will be released to try to deceive men again, and there will be a great war until fire from Heaven comes down and consumes them. THEN THE DEVIL WILL BE THROWN INTO THE LAKE OF FIRE AND SULFUR AND WILL BE TORMENTED DAY AND NIGHT FOREVER AND EVER!”

Next comes “the Great White Throne Judgment,” when all the dead will stand before God’s throne. Books will be opened and the dead will be judged by WHAT THEY HAVE DONE, as written in the books.  “If anyone’s name was not written in the Lamb’s Book of Life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.“. 

Revelation 21.

John then saw a NEW heaven and a NEW earth.  He saw “the Holy City” descending out of heaven from God, like a bride adorned for her husband.  GOD IS GOING TO DWELL WITH MEN, AND THEY WILL BE HIS PEOPLE, AND HE THEIR GOD. 

All tears will be wiped away. There won’t be death, no mourning, no crying, and no more pain.  All things will be made new. 

Then, an angel showed John the Holy City, Jerusalem, descending out of Heaven from God. It was radiant like the most rare jewel, crystal clear like a diamond.  It had a high wall with twelve gates. Inscribed on each gate was the name of one of the twelve sons of Israel.  The wall had twelve foundations made of twelve precious jewels, with each of the twelve apostles’ names on them. 

The angel with John measured the city. It was a perfect 1,500-mile cube (about 2 million square miles in volume). It mirrored the configuration of the Most Holy Place in the temple.  It was made of pure gold, transparent as glass. 

There was NO TEMPLE because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb were the temple.

There was NO SUN OR MOON because the glory of God and the lamp of the Lamb gave it light.

There was NOTHING UNCLEAN, ONLY those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life are allowed to enter the city.

Revelation 22.

The angel then showed John the pure, crystal-clear river of the Water of Life flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.  It flowed through the middle of the street of the city. Growing on either side was the Tree of Life with twelve kinds of fruits, one for each month.

The servants of God and the Lamb will worship  Him.  And they will SEE HIS FACE. (see 1 John 3:2)

John then signs his name. “I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things.”   

The angel told John, “Do NOT seal up the words of the prophecy of this book (like the prophet Daniel was told to do in Daniel 8:26, 12:4-10), “for the time is near.”

“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me to repay everyone for what he has done. I am the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” 

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”

The Spirit and the Bride say, COME!

Let the one who hears (reads) say, COME!

He who testifies to these things (Jesus) says, SURELY I AM COMING SOON.

John says, AMEN. COME, LORD JESUS!

We did it. What a glorious trip through the Word of Almighty God, from pure beginning to purity restored.  Glory, hallelujah!
