Reading the Gospels in 2026: (2/10) Mark 10:32-52

February 10– Reading Mark 10:32-52

Read and believe in Jesus.

“What do you want me to do for you?”  Mark 10:50b

The Gospel according to Mark 10:32-52

We left Jesus and the disciples on the eastern side of the Jordan River.  They’d just watched the rich young ruler turn away from Jesus.  Jesus told them that riches did not buy their way into the kingdom of God, but following Him and giving up material things was the way to blessing.

Now they were heading west towards Jerusalem.  They would pause for a short time in Jericho, then walk through the wilderness up to the holy city for Passover.

Vss. 32-34.

Right on the heels of that conversation about leaving all to follow Jesus, He – for the third time – told the disciples that He would “be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they would condemn Him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. And they will mock Him and spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him. And after three days He will rise.”

Again, we see no response.  Surely they heard the words. Pain. Death. Resurrection….

Vss. 35-45.

But it seems it was the turn of the “Sons of Thunder” to ask about the Kingdom of God.  Not about leaving everything behind or about suffering and dying, but about honor and privilege when the kingdom came.

  • “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you,” said James and John.
  • “What do you want me to do for you?” asked Jesus, although He knew exactly what they were going to ask.
  • “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in Your glory.”
  • I imagine Jesus just shook His head at their naivety. “You do not know what you are asking.  Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptised with the baptism with which I am baptised?” 

Jesus, of course, was speaking of the suffering and the horrible substitutional death He would experience for all who would be saved from their sins.

  • Proudly, the two answered, “We are able.”

Jesus probably looked at them with love, these two fiery young men who willingly followed Him. He knew that James would be the first martyr of the Twelve in just a few years, and that although John would live to an old age, he would be tortured and spend years in exile.

  • “The cup I drink, you WILL drink, and my baptism, you WILL experience.  But to sit at my right and left hands … is not mine to grant, but for those for whom it’s been prepared.”

Of course, the other ten disciples were indignant with James and John.  How dare they!  Why did they think THEY were better?

  • Jesus had to calm them all down. “Actually…”He said, “Ruling and authority over others shall NOT be so among YOU.” 
  • He looked around at them closely. “Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.”
  • “Even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”  

(I bet that quieted them for a while.)

Vss 46-52.

They spent a short time in Jericho, then, amid a huge crowd of people, they went out from the city. By the side of the road was a blind beggar, whose name was Bartimaeus (Son of Timaeus).  He heard the crowd passing -possibly coughed at the dust that rose.  He learned that it was Jesus of Nazareth.  He’d heard of the great teacher/healer, and who He was.  Hope rose in him.  And panic that Jesus would pass him by.

  • “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” cried Bartimaeus.
  • The crowd looked at him, not in pity but in annoyance.  “Be quiet!”
  • “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” he cried even louder.

Jesus heard him and stopped. He called for someone to bring the blind man to Him.

  • Now the voice of the crowd changed. “Take heart. Get up; He is calling for you.”

Bartimaeus threw off his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus … following the sound of that kind voice.

  • “What do you want me to do for you?”
  • “Rabbi, let me recover my sight.”
  • “Go your way; your faith has made you well.

And immediately he recovered his sight … AND FOLLOWED JESUS ON THE WAY.

What a good story of simple faith. And determination.

Since the blind man was named (and was wearing a cloak), it’s possible that he was a known merchant of some standing in the city, who had, for some reason, lost his sight and was left to beg for a living.  Perhaps an accident or a disease had caused him to be blind. Notice he asked that his sight be recovered, as in, found after being lost.

He’d heard of Jesus.  And he believed in Him.  Notice what Bartimaeus called Jesus.  “Son of David” was Jesus’ Messianic title.  Bartimaeus knew Jesus was “the One to come,” and knew if he could get close to Him, he would be healed.

And afterward… Bartimaeus followed Jesus.   No question. So unlike the rich young ruler.

 

 

 

 

 

Reading the Gospels in 2026: (2/3) Mark 9:2-13

February 3– Reading Mark 9:2-13

Read and believe in Jesus.

“And He was transfigured before them, and His clothes became radiant, intensely white as no one on earth could bleach them.  And there appeared … Elijah with Moses … talking with Jesus.”  Mark 9:2-4

.

The Gospel according to Mark 9:2-13.

Jesus and the disciples have been north of Israel, in the area of Caesarea Philippi, where Jesus gives them the hard teaching about His suffering, death, and resurrection (though they seem not to have heard the last word).

And he taught them (and the crowd) that they too would suffer and possibly lose their lives if they desired to follow Him.  Sobering words!

Then Jesus said that some of them WOULD NOT see death until they saw “the kingdom of God come with power.”  What did that mean?   (Pentecost?  Or what was about to happen to His inner three disciples on the mountain?)

Vss. 2-3.

Six days after that amazing statement, Jesus and his men climbed Mount Hermon. Jesus left nine disciples waiting in a lower place and took Peter, James, and John higher up the mountain. Then, to their utter amazement, terror, and fascination …. Jesus was “transfigured” before them.

What does that mean?

He was “transformed” (partially) from the Jewish man in a homespun robe, into the true Eternal One clothed with the heavenly glory He shared with His Father from Eternity past.  This was “the true Light that had come into the world.” It was radiant. Intensely white. No human could have bleached His clothes to shine so brilliantly.

(I’ve always pictured this scene like some modern-day superhero, pulling his human shirt open to allow his true character to be seen.  But THIS glory, which emanated from the Lord Jesus, was shining through His robes.  HE WAS the Light.)

(The promise to true believers is that we will one day be “transformed” into the “likeness of Jesus.” 2 Corinthians 3:18.)

Vss. 4-8.

This vision of Jesus would have been enough, but the disciples also saw the living Elijah and Moses talking with Him.  (Luke 9:31 says they were talking to Jesus about His upcoming death.)

(How did the disciples recognize Elijah and Moses? God revealed it to them, just as we will recognize the souls of Bible characters, family members, and even the babies we’ve lost, when we get to heaven.)

(It’s interesting that Moses and Elijah represent the whole Old Testament: The Law and The Prophets, both of which pointed to Jesus and His work of redemption, from Genesis 3:15 onwards. These two will be seen again during the final days of earth, according to Revelation 11:5-6.)

Peter, ever with an open mouth and an opinion, spoke to Jesus, even though he didn’t know what he was saying.

“Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

(I’m sure we’ve all said similar nonsense in our nervousness!)

But God Almighty, the Father of Eternity, interruped Peter’s feeble words by surrounding the three holy ones in the Shekinah Cloud of His Presence.  And speaking aloud,

“This is my beloved Son, LISTEN to HIM.”

(Matthew tells us that when the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces (which is the typical response of a mere human in the presence of God. (See Isaiah 6:5, Rev. 1:17)

The next thing they knew, Jesus, in his everyday clothes, was touching them, helping them up. It was once again a mountain place, and not the halls of Heaven.

Vss. 9-13.

As they returned down to the other disciples, Jesus commanded them TO TELL NO ONE what they had seen (and that included the other nine) UNTIL He had risen from the dead.

Peter, James, and John kept this amazing incident to themselves (who would even believe them anyway?) but still questioned Jesus’s words about the resurrection.

(Hadn’t they heard his prediction that he would DIE… and be resurrected?  They, like we, sometimes only hear what we WANT to hear, and they wanted to hear about Jesus setting up His Kingdom here and now.)

Also on the climb down, the disciples asked Jesus about Elijah. “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?”

This had been a conversation before, and indeed, the Jews from Jerusalem had even asked John the Baptist if HE was Elijah.  Jesus told the three that “Elijah HAS come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it was written of him.”  ***

(NOTE: *** John’s murder “typically” fulfilled the fate that was intended for the OT Elijah, although it had not been “actually” prophesied. The vile, murderous Queen Jezebel vowed to kill Elijah (1 Kings 19:1-2), but God had other things for Elijah to do.  However, when the vile, murderous Queen Herodias vowed to kill John the Baptist, her equally evil husband, Herod, killed the prophet.)

Luke 1:17 does say that John the Baptist came, “in the Spirit and Power of Elijah,” if they would accept that.

Reading the Gospels in 2026: (2/2) Mark 8:22 – 9:1

February 2– Reading Mark 8:22- 9:1.

Read and believe in Jesus.

And He asked them, “Who do YOU say that I am?”  Peter answered Him, “You are the Christ.”  Mark 8:29

The Gospel according to Mark 8:22-39, 9:1

Jesus has been leading His disciples outside Israel proper to give Himself time away from the crowds to teach them.  They’ve spent a bit of time to the north and to the east in Decapolis, with a brief boat trip into Galilee to the area of Magdala, where some Pharisees from Jerusalem demanded that He show them a sign to prove His claims.

Then the disciples endured a strong questioning from Jesus about baskets of bread vs the evil of leaven. They were confused.

Vss. 22-26.

Now they are back in Bethsaida in upper Galilee. Immediately, some people brought a blind man to Him and begged that He heal him. Jesus took the man to a private place. He spat, then touched the man’s eyes.

“Do you see anything?” Jesus asked him.

“I see men, but they look like trees walking around.”

Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again, and when the man opened his eyes, his sight was restored clearly.

“Do not even enter the village,” Jesus commanded the former blind man.

And he apparently obeyed!

NOTE: So why did it take two touches of Jesus’ hands to completely heal the man’s sight?  Lack of faith?  A way to avoid the shock of instant sight?  Two kinds of diseases?  To spend more time with the man? 

Mark just reports this incident; he says nothing about how it happened.

Vss. 27-30.

Jesus again leads the disciples out of Israel, way north into the foothills of Mount Hermon, to the villages of Caesarea Phillippi. (This is not the coastal city of Caesarea.)  On the way, Jesus asked them a question.

“Who do people say that I am?”

They told Him about the speculations they’d heard.

“Some say, John the Baptist.”

“Others say, Elijah.”

‘Others, one of the prophets.”

(It’s interesting that all these people were dead and would have to be reincarnated to be Jesus now.)

“But who do YOU say that I am?” Jesus asked.

And Peter answered, “You are the Christ.” (Messiah)

Perhaps Jesus nodded and looked around at the others.  Then He told them, in no uncertain terms, not to tell this to anyone.

NOTE: This was not the time or place to “announce” Him. The people might rush Him and demand that He set up the kingdom right now, as they had wanted to do after He fed the 5,000.  Later, after Jesus’ death and resurrection, He would THEN charge them to tell this to the whole world.

Vss. 31-33

Now comes the hard part: the truths about Jesus that the disciples would not want to hear, and had not expected to hear from the long-awaited Messiah of Israel.

Jesus began to teach them clearly: “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.”

What a shocker!  Had they heard correctly?  Suffer and die?  Wasn’t the Christ, the Messiah, supposed to set up His kingdom and throw out the Romans?  This couldn’t be!  Was Jesus testing them in some way?

Peter took Jesus aside and, expressing the thoughts of all of them, rebuked Him.

(Matthew records Peter saying to Jesus, “God forbid it, Lord! That must never happen to you!”)

Jesus, seeing the other disciples watching and agreeing, said harshly, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man!”

Whoa!

Did Peter’s mouth drop open?  Did he step back a pace?

(NOTE: Jesus did not believe that Peter WAS Satan, but he was being used by Satan to once again tempt Jesus away from the cross.  Jesus’s sacrificial death on the cross was God’s plan, and whoever opposed it was doing Satan’s work, even if they didn’t realize it.)

Vss. 34-39, 9:1.

It must have been quiet for a while as they walked.  As they neared the villages, the crowds once again flocked to Jesus.  Jesus’ mind must still have been on His future horrific work on Golgotha, for He spoke to (taught) both His disciples AND the crowds these hard things….

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.

“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?  For what can a man give in return for his soul?

“For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of HIM will the Son of Man also be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

“Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death, until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.”

Did Jesus’ words confuse the disciples and the crowd?

Were His followers required then to also suffer and die with Him?

And then, had He stated the opposite?  He WOULD set up His kingdom in their lifetime.

This crowd, including the disciples, was definitely quiet and thoughtful after these words.

Jesus would be in the villages for six days, perhaps teaching and healing, but then he would take His disciples, especially the three closest to Him, up Mount Hermon for a mountain-top experience they would never forget.

Reading the Gospels in 2026: (1/13) Mark 3:20-35

January 13 – Reading Mark 3:20-35.

Read and believe in Jesus.

“For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.”  Mark 3:35

 

The Gospel According to Mark 3:20-35. 

Two groups responded to what Jesus was doing in Galilee: His family and some scribes (Pharisees) who came from Jerusalem.  Seeing Jesus “spending Himself” on the needs of the crowds, one group said He was crazy; the other said He was demon-possessed.  Let’s look at the first group first.

Vss. 20, 31-35. Family.

After Jesus went up to a secluded spot on the mountain and chose His twelve special disciples to train for ministry, He went “home.”  This meant that He went back to Capernaum to Peter’s house, where He was staying. (See Mark 2:1)  

As soon as he got there, the crowds began gathering and maybe even accosting Him again, pressing in and seeking healing from their many health issues, and deliverance from foul spirits.   Before Jesus went up into the mountain, Mark says the crowd was about to “crush” Him. They pressed Jesus so much to heal them that He didn’t even have time to eat.

We might wonder why Jesus didn’t tell them to “back up” or “get in line,” or even “come back at two o’clock, after I have lunch.”  But Jesus didn’t.  He continued to meet the crowd’s needs, hour after hour.  In Mark 6:34, it says Jesus had compassion on the crowd because they were like sheep without a shepherd.  (The religious leaders of the day certainly were not “shepherding” them.)

Somehow, Jesus’ family (mom, sisters, and brothers) heard how hard and long He had been ministering to the crowds, some from as far away as Lebanon and the other side of the Jordan River. His family couldn’t understand this and came to “rescue” Jesus by force if needed.  They thought he was “out of His mind.”

  • (Note: Paul says in 2 Corinthians 5:13-14a, “if we are ‘beside ourselves,’ it is for God, if we are in our right mind, it is for you. For the love of Christ constrains/controls us … that those who live, might no longer live for themselves but for Him, who for their sake died and was raised.”  
  • This was Paul’s dedication to others. And Jesus’s.  Self-sacrificing LOVE.

Vss. 31-35.

Jesus was finally inside Peter’s house.  There were still crowds around the house and even inside.  (Remember when the four men had to let down their paralysed friend through the roof?)  

A message from his family, who were outside, came to Jesus.  They wanted Him to come out.  They probably wanted him to go with them, to get some “peace and quiet,” a meal perhaps, to rest, and “catch His breath.” 

Jesus said, “Who are my mother and my brothers?  HERE are my mother and brothers! For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.“

Do you think Mary was “hurt” to hear this, or was this another truth that she “pondered in her heart”?  Did it anger His half-siblings?  They teased Jesus about His ministry until after His death and resurrection, when at least two of them became believers (James and Jude). 

The verses don’t say, but it’s probably true that Jesus’ earthly family eventually went away, not understanding.  One day, they would.

Vss. 22-30.  The scribes/Pharisees.

More religious leaders came from Jerusalem to check out Jesus. (Perhaps the local leaders sent for them after Jesus healed and cast out a demon on the Sabbath Day.)  These scribes, sometimes called lawyers, were mostly Pharisees, although a few were Sadducees. 

These ultra-religious men observed Jesus casting out unclean spirits. Did they envy this power? They knew that only a prophet sent from God could have such authority.  And yet they said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul (Satan), and by the Prince of the demons, He casts out the demons.”  

Did they think about what they were saying?  WHY would Satan cast out his own demons???

Jesus caught that too and said, “How can Satan cast out Satan?  If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.  If Satan has risen up against himself and is divided … he can’t stand and is coming to an end.”

Then Jesus – in a parable of sorts – tells them that HE is the only one who has power over Satan and his minions.  “No one can enter a strong man’s house (Satan’s domain) and plunder his goods (cast out demons), unless he (Jesus Himself) first binds the strong men.  Then he can plunder as he wishes.”

Then Jesus turns to these scribes, who knew the Law and the Prophets in detail, and proclaimed a very chilling statement.  (Which has sent terror into the hearts of people even today.)

“Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, BUT whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit NEVER HAS FORGIVENESS, but is guilty of AN ETERNAL SIN.”

Why is this so?

Because, in deliberately slandering the person and ministry of the Holy Spirit who points to the lordship and the redemption of Jesus Christ, they completely forfeit any possibility of present or future forgiveness of sins.  There is NO OTHER WAY.

Day 365 – Reading – Revelation 19 – 22

Read and believe in Jesus!

The Revelation 19.

After the horrendous events of the previous seven chapters, we finally see evil defeated and the Lord Jesus Christ victorious.

“Hallelujah!” cry the multitudes in heaven.

“Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for his judgments are true and just.”

“Amen! Hallelujah!” cry the 24 elders.

“Praise our God, all you His servants, you who fear Him, great and small.”

“Hallelujah! cry a great multitude with the voice of thunder.

“For the Lord our God, the Almighty reigns.

Let us rejoice and exult and give Him the glory,

for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His Bride has made herself ready;

It was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen (the righteous deeds of the saints), bright and pure.”

 

“Write this,” said the angel. “Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And John was so overcome, he fell at the feet of the angel and worshiped him.

“You must not do that!” cried the angel. “I am a fellow servant. Worship GOD!”

.

Next, John saw the heavens split and a WHITE HORSE gallop out. Riding on it was One called “Faithful and True.”  John recognized Him from His appearance and what He wore.  “It is The Word of God.” (Remember John’s Gospel 1:1?) 

“The King of kings and the Lord of lords!” was written on His thigh.

And with Him were the armies of heaven, dressed in white and pure. These were: the church, the tribulation saints, the O.T. believers, and even angels.

“And the beast was captured, and with it, the false prophet who, in its presence, had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped the image. THESE TWO were thrown alive into the Lake of Fire that burned with (stinky) sulfur.

All the rest of the enemies of God were slain by the sword (the Word) that came out of the mouth of the white horse rider. And all the birds gorged on their flesh.

Revelation 20.

And the GLORIOUS ACT OF JUDGMENT ON SATAN!! 

“And I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit, and a great chain.  And he SEIZED THE DRAGON, THAT ANCIENT SERPENT, WHO IS THE DEVIL AND SATAN, and bound him for a thousand years.  (The Millennium, when Israel will get its time of rule on the earth, with their Messiah reigning as King in Jerusalem.)

The angel threw the devil into the pit and shut it and sealed it so that he might not DECEIVE the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. (And then only for a little while.)

Saints who had been martyred for their testimony of Jesus and the Word of God came to life now and reigned with Him for those thousand years.  (The rest of the dead did NOT come to life until after the 1,000 years.)

When the thousand years are ended … Satan will be released to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth – Gog and Magog – to gather them for battle and “take” the Holy City.  But fire will come from heaven and consume them all.

Satan will be thrown into the lake of fire with the beast and the false prophet.  They will be tormented day and night forever and ever. AMEN!!

THE GREAT WHITE THRONE JUDGMENT.

And then…. John saw a great white throne, and HIM who was seated on it.   From His presence …. the earth and sky fled away and were no more.

Then John saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne.  And the books were opened (with the deeds of the people). And another book was opened – The Book of Life.  And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 

(No good works recorded, ever, will grant them LIFE, only if they had trusted in the finished work of Jesus and their names were in the Book of Life.)

EACH ONE was judged. 

And if his name was not in the Lamb’s Book of Life …

… he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21.

Then John saw a glorious new heaven and earth, and a new Jerusalem coming down from God like a Bride prepared for her Husband.

“Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people, and God Himself will be with them as their God.  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

God said, “I am making all things new.” 

Then to John, “Write this down.  It is done!  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of water of life without payment. The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God, and he will be my son.”

.

Then one of the “bowls” angels came again to John and said, “Come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb.”  

And he carried John away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain. He showed him the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down from heaven from God, “having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel like jasper (diamond), clear as crystal….”

And John describes (or tries to describe) what this glorious city looked like. See 21:12-27, ending with “…only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life will ever enter it.”

Revelation 22.

The angel showed John the river of the Water of Life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city. On either side of the river is the Tree of Life with twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. And the leaves were for the healing of the nations.

No longer will there be ANYTHING accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His servants will worship Him. And….. They will see HIS FACE!

And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the LORD God will be their light.  And they will reign forever and ever.

Then the angel said to John, “These words are trustworthy and true, to show God’s servants what must soon take place.”

“And behold, I am coming soon.  Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”

.

John, signing his signature:  “I John, am the one who heard and saw these things.”

.

He continued to John, “Do NOT seal up the words of the prophecy of this book, for the time is near.“

“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay everyone for what he has done.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

 

Then, it’s as if Jesus also “signed His signature” as proof of the truths in this book.

“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches.  I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”

 

In response, the Spirit and the Bride say, “Come!”

 

Then a warning from John.  “I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book, if anyone ADDS to them, God will ADD to him the plagues described in this book,  and if anyone TAKES AWAY from the words of the book of prophecy, God will take away his share of the tree of life in the holy city which are described in this book.”

“Surely I am coming soon.”

“Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!”

In 2026, I hope to do a smaller, simpler study/reading of the four Gospels, beginning with Mark on January 1st.

After Mark, will be Luke (on March 5th) and John (on June 11th). Matthew (on September 7th) will end the year. (The Lord willing.)

This will be in Monday through Friday postings only. (Weekends off)

Day 362 – Reading – Revelation 1 – 5

Read and believe in Jesus!

The Revelation of Jesus Christ.

Yep, that’s the full title of the book. 

“Revelation” means “an uncovering,” “an unveiling,” or “a disclosure.” What this book reveals is Jesus Christ in glory.  The truths about Him and His final victory that the Scriptures allude to become visible in this book. 

(Visible, but “through a glass darkly,” at least for me.)

The Apostle John is the author. He is the only one who refers to Jesus as “the Word” and “the Lamb” both in his Gospel and this book.

The spiritual decline of the seven churches of Asia Minor tells us that John wrote this book last, after his three letters.  He is a very old man, the last of the original apostles, and he’s in exile on the small, barren island of Patmos, in the Aegean Sea just southwest of Ephesus.  He’s been banished there for his faithful preaching of the gospel.  While there, he received this vision.

This is a message of hope to the faltering churches experiencing persecution. God is sovereign in all the events of history, and though evil men often seem all-powerful, their ultimate doom is certain. Christ will come in glory to judge and rule.  (I wonder how the churches responded as this letter/book was read to them.)

In The Revelation (past the messages to the seven churches), we “learn about:

  • the final political setup of the world;
  • the last battle of human history;
  • the career and ultimate defeat of Antichrist;
  • Christ’s 1,000-year earthly kingdom;
  • the glories of heaven and the eternal state;
  • and the final state of the wicked and the righteous.

God rules over the kingdoms of men and will accomplish His sovereign purposes regardless of human or demonic opposition.  Hallelujah!  Praise Him forever!

Revelation 1

God gave this revelation first to His Beloved Son as a reward for His perfect submission, to show Him His future glory.  It was then given to John to share abroad.

BLESSED is the one who READS ALOUD the words of this prophecy (Go ahead, do it!).  And BLESSED are those who HEAR it and KEEP what is written in it.  (What promises!!)

And so John begins the most magnificent letter of revelation that he’s ever written.   

“To the seven churches that are in Asia.  Grace to you and peace from Him, who IS and who WAS and who IS TO COME, from the seven-fold Spirit before the throne, and from Jesus Christ, faithful witness, firstborn of the dead, and ruler of all kings on earth. And behold, He is coming with the clouds and every eye will see Him.”

What a salutation!!

Then a side note from John, who tells how it happened.  I’m your brother in tribulation, and while I was in exile on Patmos, I had this vision and commission. 

“Write what you see in a book and send it to the seven churches: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.” 

Now if you look on your Bible map, you will see these churches form a loose horse shoe shape, curving up, around and then back down again.  A perfect order for circulation.

Then John turned around to SEE who was speaking the voice that he had HEARD.

  • One like the Son of Man,
  • Clothed with a long robe with a golden sash around his chest,
  • The hairs on His head white as wool or snow.
  • His eyes like a flame of fire,
  • His feet like burnished bronze,
  • His voice like the roar of many waters.
  • In his right hand, seven stars.
  • From His mouth, a sharp two-edged sword,
  • His face like the sun shining at full strength.

This was no humble carpenter from Nazareth!!  When John saw Him, he fell at His feet like a dead man.

“Don’t be afraid, said the exalted Jesus. “I am the first and last, the living one. I died and behold I am alive forever.  And I have the keys of Death and Hades.”

And this glorious Savior-God tells John to write down what he’s seen, what things are, and those things that are to take place after this.   Then a hint at what John saw already.  The “stars” you saw in my hand are the angels (perhaps the key elders) of the seven churches, and the “lampstands” are the seven churches.”

So John takes up his parchment and quill and prepares to write…

Revelation 2 & 3.

Chapters two and three are the personal, individual messages to those seven churches.  These were ACTUAL churches, with the problems listed. But, they can also represent the “types” of churches that have existed throughout the church age.  What the glorified Jesus says to them, is relevant today.

In each, Jesus identifies Himself in a particular way.  He reveals what He knows about the churches, both the good, bad, and the ugly. He sometimes commends them. He often scolds and warns them. And He usually gives an ultimatum and/or a promise.  LOOK FOR THESE as you read.

EPHESUS:

(Jesus, the One who holds the seven stars and walks among the lampstands.) 

Jesus knows how hard they are working and enduring, and that they hate the “Nicolaitans.” (False teachers leading the people into immorality.)  However, they “have lost their first love” towards Him. He calls for them to repent. and promises the Tree of Life in Paradise if they do.

SMYRNA

(Jesus, the first and last, who died and came to life.)

Jesus tells this persecuted church that He KNOWS their tribulation, and the slander hurled against them by Jews who are really Satan’s emisaries.  Jesus warns them that they will be tested severely, imprisoned, and martyred.  “Be faithful to death and I will give you the Crown of Life. You won’t be hurt by the “second death.“

PERGAMUM

(Jesus, who has the sharp two-edged sword.) 

Jesus tells this church that He KNOWS they are situated right in the center of Satanic activity and false religions. (On the acropolis was a giant alter to Zeus. A god of healing, represented by a snake, was also associated with Pergamum, and the “medicine men” forced the sick to lie in the temple with snakes crawling over them!!!)  Immorality was also rampant.  Jesus tells them to REPENT!  If they obey, He will give them some of the “hidden manna” (spiritual bread of life), and a “white stone with a new name on it” (symbol of reaching the winner’s circle.

THYATIRA

(Jesus , the Son of God whose eyes are like fire and feet are like fiery bronze.)

Jesus, the Son of God, tells this church He KNOWS about their love, faith, service, and patient endurance. However, He is NOT PLEASED with how they tolerate the woman called Jezebel, who says she’s a prophetess, but who teaches and seduces them into sexual immorality.  Just reprisals will be laid against her and all who follow her.  BUT, to those who resist her teaching, Jesus says to “hold fast until I come,” and He will give them authority over nations to rule. He will also give them the “morning star” (Christ Himself.)

SARDIS

(Jesus who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.)

Although this church had the reputation of being alive, Jesus knows they are DEAD. “Wake up!” He says. “Remember what you received and heard. Keep it, and REPENT!  If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief against you.”  And yet…. Jesus sees a few in Sardis who have not “soiled their garments” (Not stained their characters, but remained godly).  THESE will walk with Jesus in white. He will never blot their names out of the book of life, but confess them before His Father.”

PHILADELPHIA

(Jesus, the holy One, the true One, who has the key of David, who opens and shuts and no one can undo it.) 

Jesus knows this church’s works. They have little power, but have kept His word and not denied Him. “I have loved you. And because you have kept my word, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world.  I’m coming soon!  Hold fast to what you have!”  To those who conquor, Jesus promises to make them a “pillar” in the Temple (a secure place in the presence of gGod). He will write the Name of God on them, and His own New Name.”

LAODICEA

Jesus, the “Amen (so be it.), the Faithful and True Witness, the Beginning of God’s Creation.)

Jesus knows the lukewarmness of this church. They are neither cold or hot, but a sickening blah taste.  Jesus says, “I will spit you out of my mouth!”   “You say you are rich, prosperous, need nothing…. but you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.  I counsel you to buy GOLD REFINED IN THE FIRE, and WHITE GARMENTS, so the shame of your nakedness may not be seen.  Be zealous and REPENT!!  And if they truly do, Jesus promises them they will sit with Him on His throne. 

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches!”

Revelation 4.

After John finished writing these notes to the seven churches, he looked up and saw…. “Behold, a door standing open in heaven!”   Then John heard the invitation, ““Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.”

And immediately, John was “in the Spirit.” 

He saw a glorious throne and the God of Heaven seated on it. He describes it, much like what Ezekiel and Daniel and Isaiah wrote.  Glorious colors and light, a crystal sea, emerald rainbows and loud thunderous sound.  Elders and angels and amazing creatures all singing praise and falling down in worship.

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty; who was and is and is to come.”

The elders cast down their crowns before such a One.

“Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things and by Your will they existed and were created!”

Revelation 5.

Then John saw in God’s right hand a scroll written on both sides and sealed with seven seals.  An angel called, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break the seals?”

Silence.

And John began to cry loudly.

Then an angel come to him and told him NOT to weep for THE LION OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH, THE ROOT OF DAVID has conquored, and HE can open the scroll and seals.”

A lion….. but when John looked, it was a Lamb, standing there, looking as though it had been killed (bloody).   He walked to the throne and took the scroll….

And immediate praise erupted. Music and incense, and a NEW SONG sung.

“Worthy are You to take the scroll and to open it seals, for You were slain, and by Your blood You ransomed people for God from every tribe , language, people, and nation, and You have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.”

At that, John saw many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands all saying with a loud voice,

‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!”

And answering them was “every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea and all that is them,

“To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever.”

Then the elders responded with “AMEN,” falling down before Him in worship.

Day 319 – Reading – Luke 24 and John 20-21

Read and believe in Jesus!

Luke 24 and John 20-21.

These chapters (like yesterday) tell of the Resurrection of Jesus.  He told Martha that He was “the resurrection and the life,” and He’s proved it now.  Luke provides more small details of the events, while John includes more events and the very purpose of His Gospel.

The Resurrection

On the first day of the week, while it was still dark, the faithful women walked to the tomb with spices to anoint the body of their Lord.  They were met instead by two brilliantly white angels who asked them,

“Why do you seek the living among the dead?  He is not here, but has risen.  Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise?”

Yes! They remembered His words!!  And they hurried to the eleven disciples to tell them the good news (which the men did not believe at first).

Jesus and Mary Magdalene

But Mary just couldn’t take it all in. It was too much to bear?  Alive?  Where was His body? And Jesus appeared to her, calling her by name.  And THEN she believed.  She was like Thomas: she needed that little bit more to help her unbelief.  Jesus understands. He loves his followers and gives them what they need.

Peter and John Check the Tomb

Meanwhile, Peter and John decided to check out what the women said.  They ran to the tomb. John, the faster runner, got there first but hesitated at the door.  Peter charged right in, and then John followed. Sure enough, the tomb was empty.

But they saw details that confused and encouraged them.  The grave clothes that Joseph had wrapped Jesus’ body in were still there, lying as if the body had risen right through them.  And the linen cloth that had been around Jesus’ head was … folded and laid aside … purposefully.  What grave robber would take the time to do that?  Could it be?  Was He?  John believed, for sure. Peter, maybe, but still hesitated. But he marveled at the thought as he went home. Jesus alive!!!

On the Road to Emmaus

Two other disciples, one named Cleopas, decided to go back home. It was about a day’s walk, and as they went, they discussed all that had happened – from the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on a colt, to His wonderful teaching and sparring with the religious leaders, to His arrest, trials, and finally, that horrible crucifixion and quiet burial.  They could not understand.  They thought Jesus was the Messiah, but now He was dead.  It all happened so quickly.

And while they were in deep, anguished conversation, another man joined them on the way, asking why all the earnest talk and sad faces.  They explained to this man (Jesus) all that had happened.  And HE explained to them how all those baffling things were the fulfillments of prophecy.  He listed the prophecies in the Law, the prophets, and the writings that this Jesus had fulfilled.  Gradually, the eyes of their understanding were opened.

They asked Jesus to stay at their house for a while ( for dinner) and He agreed.  Then, as He broke bread and blessed it … oh, that looks familiar… didn’t Jesus do it just that way?  Was… was… THIS MAN Jesus????  YES!  He was!  And as soon as Jesus revealed Himself, He vanished.

The two gobbled down the food and immediately started back to Jerusalem.  They HAD to tell the others.  They had SEEN the risen Jesus.  He was ALIVE!

Jesus appears to 10 Disciples

Meanwhile, back in Jerusalem, the ten disciples (minus Thomas, who was somewhere, alone and despondent) were sitting behind locked doors, eating a bit of fish and bread.  They were mourning Jesus’ death, hardly believing what the women said, and what the two leaders had seen. What would they do now?

Then. there was Jesus, standing among them as always.  They about jumped out of their skin!  A ghost!!

“Peace, to you!  Calm down, brothers. It’s me.  See the nail scars in my hands and on my side?  Touch me and see, for a ghost does not have flesh and bones.  Do you have anything to eat?

They gave him some of the fish, and Jesus ate it.  Gradually, they believed it was Jesus, in the flesh (new flesh), risen from the dead.

After Jesus disappeared again, the ten told Thomas what had happened, wishing he had been there too.

“Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into His side …. I will never believe.”   

(Remember, Thomas had a melancholy disposition.  He usually saw things in a negative way. [At the feeding of the 5,000, he’d said they would NEVER have food enough. When Jesus said he was going to Bethany to see the dead Lazarus, Thomas said they should go along and DIE with Him.)  But Jesus understands all our personalities (like he did Mary’s).

Jesus appears to all 11 Disciples

Eight days later, Jesus appears through the walls again, and Thomas is with them.

Jesus:  “Thomas, put your finger here and see my hands; and put out your hand and place it in my side.  Do not disbelieve, but believe.”

Thomas:  “My Lord and my God!”

Jesus:  “Have you believed because you have seen me?  Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

The Purpose of John’s Account

It’s here, after Thomas declares his belief, and Jesus blesses all who will not see Him, and yet believe, that John writes the purpose of his gospel.

“Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but THESE are written so that YOU MAY BELIEVE THAT JESUS IS THE CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD, and that by believing, you may have Life in His name.”

Jesus Appears to 7 Disciples in Galilee

Later, back in their hometown, a few of the disciples decide to go fishing.  They are at loose ends. (Jesus hasn’t given them the “great commission” yet, or told them to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit.) He only said He would meet them in Galilee.

They fish all night without success (just like old times).

Meanwhile, on shore, they can see someone with a fire going.  The man calls and asks if they have any fish.  They say they haven’t.  Then … in a strangely familiar way … the man tells them to throw their nets on the other side of the boat.  They hesitate, then do it.  And WOW!  The fish are practically jumping into the boat.

They haul in a load, then Peter notices John is staring at the man.  “It’s the LORD,” John says in awe.  Peter swings around.  As he recognizes Jesus, he is already putting on his shirt. Unable to wait till the boat gets to shore, Peter dives in and power-strokes to his Master.  He is at Jesus’ feet, weeping, and Jesus is making him stand as the boat arrives.  (‘Later, Peter,’ Jesus whispers.)

Jesus adds a few fish to the fish he’s cooking and the bread He’s warming, and serves the men breakfast.  As Jesus broke the fish and bread and handed them out, an intense sense of Deja vu overwhelmed them, and they remembered the 5,000 and the 4,000, and many other times He’d fed them.

Did Jesus remind them again of His first call?  “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

Jesus and Peter.

While the men finished eating and saw to the fish they’d caught, Jesus began reinstating Peter as the group’s leader. All listened quietly as Peter pledged his brotherly love for Jesus.  Three times Peter had denied Jesus (they all knew it), now Jesus asked Peter three times if he loved Him.  “Yes, Lord, You know I love You!’  ” Yes, Lord, You know that I love You!”  “Lord, You know everything, You know that I love You!” 

Jesus looked deeply into Peter’s soul and recommissioned him, “Feed my lambs.” “Tend my sheep.”  “Feed my sheep.”  Jesus had prayed for Peter in his hour of trial as He promised, and He saw Peter’s godly sorrow and repentance.  Now, Jesus showed the others that he was forgiven, and again in the leadership position.

Then Jesus alluded to what kind of martyrdom Peter would face.  He, too, would be crucified (so prepare yourself!), and God would be glorified through his death.  But that was in the future. Meanwhile, Peter was simply to “Follow me,” said Jesus.

Jesus and John.

Then, as was Peter’s habit, he briefly looked away from Jesus – remember when Peter was walking on water? When he looked away from Jesus, he began to sink.  Here, he does the same.

Peter, looking at John: “Lord, what about this man?  How will he die?”

Jesus, again scolding him for taking his eyes off Himself: “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to YOU. YOU follow ME.”

(Of course, the rumor then went around that John wouldn’t die. But that’s not what Jesus said.)

John indeed outlived the other disciples by many years, dying peacefully in his mid-nineties.   Jesus had another job for John.  Like Daniel in the Old Testament, John would see visions of the end times, both the horrors and the glories.  And he would write it all down in the book of REVELATION.

Jesus’ Commission All His Disciples

Eventually, after spending time with His disciples in Galilee, and appearing before 500 of His followers at one time, Jesus appeared with the eleven back in Jerusalem for the Feast of Pentecost.

He taught them a “crash course” on how He fulfilled all the prophecies of the Messiah in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms.  He showed them HOW the Messiah had to suffer, die, and on the third day rise from the dead.  It was all there, and Jesus made it plain to them.  Of course, the Holy Spirit would also remind them of everything, as needed.

Then Jesus told them, “Repentance and forgiveness of sins shall be proclaimed in My name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.  YOU are witnesses of these things!  And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you (the Holy Spirit). But stay in the city until you are clothed with POWER from on High.”

Ascension

John gives a brief statement of His ascension.  Luke will provide a more detailed account at the beginning of Acts in tomorrow’s study.

John’s account:  “Jesus led them out as far as Bethany, and He blessed them.  WHILE He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.  They worshiped Him and returned to the City with great joy, and were continually in the temple blessing God.”

Day 315 – Reading – John 14, 15, 16, 17.

Read and believe in Jesus!

John 14.  (as well as 15-17) is Jesus’ private teaching to the eleven disciples. Judas has gone, the meal is finished, and before they “sing a hymn” and go out to Gethsemane, Jesus comforts, teaches, promises, and prays for these closest of His chosen men.

Jesus has just told them in chapter 13 that in a little while He would be going away and that they couldn’t follow Him.  When Peter cried out that he would follow Jesus anywhere, even to death, Jesus told him of his failure that very night. (He’s still worrying about this.)

And now, looking at them, Jesus said, “Let not your hearts be troubled.”  He explains (though they do not understand right then) that He’s going away to prepare a “place” for them, but He will come back for them and take them there.

When Jesus told them that they knew the way to where he was going (back to His Father, John 7:33), Thomas asked in panic, “Lord, we do NOT know where you are going. How can we know the way?’  (Hear the anxiety in his voice.)   Gently, Jesus answers that He, Himself, is the Way AND the truth and the life.  That HE is the way to His Father.  “You know Him, right?  You’ve seen Him.”

Now Philip cries, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”

You can almost hear Jesus sigh.  “I have been with you so long, and you still don’t know me Philip?  If you’ve see ME, you’ve seen the FATHER.  I am in the Father, and He is in Me.  My words are His words. My miraculous works are His. Believe me!  I and the Father are one.”

Jesus then continues with the amazing teaching about the Holy Spirit in chapters 14, 15, and 16..

  • I will ask the Father and He will give you another Helper to be with you forever, even the SPIRIT of Truth. He will dwell with you and be IN you.
  • The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will TEACH you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
  • The Helper, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, will BEAR WITNESS about me.
  • It is to your advantage that Jesus “was going away” because then He will send the Helper to you.
  • The Helper will convict the world of sin and righteousness and judgment concerning sin.
  • When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will GUIDE you into all truth.
  • He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears, He will speak and will declare to you the things to come.
  • He will glorify Me.

He also speaks of love in these chapters.

  • If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
  • Whoever has my commandments and does them, that person loves me.
  • He who loves me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and show myself to him.
  • If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him.  We will come to him and make our home with him.
  • Whoever does NOT love Me, does not keep My words.
  • As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Abide in My love.
  • If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love.
  • This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
  • Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends.

John 15.

Jesus here gives an illustration of how their relationship with Him should be.

He describes a vineyard. His Father is the Vinedresser – the one who planted and cares for the vines.  Jesus Himself is the true vine (with roots deep into the soil).  They – His disciples and all who follow Him later – are the branches growing out from the vine onto wires to spread them out. From these branches, the grape clusters will grow.

As long as the branches are connected to the sturdy vine, they will bear fruit that will remain and grow until harvest.  But the branches MUST stay connected to the Vine.  If wind or animals/bugs, or even the Vinedresser when He prunes,  separates them from the Vine, they will quickly wither and die.  And of course, no grapes will come from those dead branches.

The Vinedresser does purposefully cut some of the branches off the Vine; those that are withered and do not bear fruit.  He does this so the fruit-bearing branches get more nourishment and produce more fruit.

Jesus uses this as a warning.  “Abide in me and bear much fruit.  Apart from Me, you can do nothing.”

And, “My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.”

And, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain.”

In Chapter 16, as well as explaining the Spirit’s ministry, Jesus tells them plainly that in a little while they won’t see Him. They will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. They will be sorrowful, BUT their sorrow will turn to joy – like a woman in childbirth rejoices when the babe is laid into her arms.

“You WILL rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”

“But…. the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave Me alone.” 

At their confused faces, Jesus says, “I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation.  But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Chapter 17.

This entire chapter is Jesus praying.  THIS is the one we should be calling “the Lord’s Prayer.”  He prays like a priest, standing between God the Father and His own disciples (present and future).  He acknowledges His relationship with the Father, asking that He would glorify the Son (Himself) in order that the Son would bring glory to the Father.

Then Jesus prays for “the people God gave to Him out of the world.” These are the ones who believe in Jesus and the Father, have received His words, and know the truth.

  • “Holy Father, keep them in Your Name, that they may be one, even as We are one.” 
  • The world hates them, as they hated Me. I do not ask You to take them out of the world.  Keep them from the Evil One.”
  • Sanctify them in the truth. Your word is truth. 
  • I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word.” 
  • O righteous Father, even though the world does not know You, I know You, and these know that You have sent me.
  • The love with which You have loved Me, may it be in them, and I in them.”

A NEW MONTH!

Day 312 – Reading – Matthew 25

Read and believe in Jesus!

Matthew 25.

Jesus continues His warnings about the end times, this time using parables and illustrations.

The Parable of the Ten Virgins warns about being prepared. Ten young women, bridesmaids, waited at the Bride’s house for the Bridegroom to come, so they could form a procession to the festivities.  These gals waited a long time, all of them napping as it got later and later.  Their oil lamps burned lower and lower. 

Finally, the joyful call that the Bridegroom was coming!  Quickly, they trimmed the wicks of their lamps, and five of them refilled them with oil.  But the other five could not.

They thought they had an adequate supply in their lamps.  They did not bring extra oil.  They did not plan on waiting a long time or persevering through the long night.  When they asked to borrow some from the others, they were denied. Perseverance and faithfulness (the oil) are a personal thing: each must have their own supply in their heart.

“Watch therefore,” Jesus said, “for you know neither the day nor the hour (of the Lord’s coming).”

The Parable of the Talents is a similar story about wasting opportunities or being faithful in the Lord’s work until He returns.  A businessman was going on a journey and called His three top servants together to assign work while he was gone. 

To his best worker, he gave a very sizable amount of money to be responsible for – FIVE talents of silver. (One silver talent was equivalent to 20 years’ wages for a common laborer).  To the man’s next best servant, the man gave the responsibility of TWO talents of silver. And to the third man, he gave the oversight of ONE silver talent.  Then the businessman went away, confident his men would do well by him.

The best worker traded on the stock market and doubled his master’s money.

The second-best worker did the same, doubling the two talents he had.

But the third man, fearful of any risk, hid the silver talent safely in a vault in the ground.  He was sure not to lose any of it that way.

When the businessman finally returned, he called all three to account.  He was very pleased with the first two servants’ wisdom and the increase in his money. He praised them and rewarded them handsomely.

But he was very disappointed and angry at the third man.  If indeed the servant knew he was a “hard man” who gathered where he did not sow, should he not have AT LEAST put the talent in the bank where it would have earned interest?  The servant was wicked and slothful, and he was kicked out into outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The wait for the Lord’s second coming may seem long (2,000 years?).  But Jesus’ true followers must be faithful, prepared, and working for the Kingdom, as God has enabled them..

The illustration of Judgment Day tells us about those who obey or disobey His Commands to love one another (even our enemies). This love reflects God’s great, undeserved love for us and the root of His salvation, planned from before the world began.

At the end, on judgment day, the King will divide the people of all the nations into “the sheep” and “the goats.”  Sheep on the right (the side of blessing) and goats on the left (the side of judgment).  He will bless the sheep and give them the Kingdom that the Father had prepared for them.

Why are we rewarded? they ask.  The King answered, “For when I was hungry, you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.”

“When did we do all this?” the sheep asked.

“When you did it to one of the least of these my brothers… you did it to me.”

THEN…

The King turned to the “goats” on His left and said, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels!”

‘Na-a-a-a, why?” they asked, and were told that when confronted with the hungry and thirsty, strangers, naked ones, the sick and imprisoned … they – from their hard, selfish hearts – did not assist, supply, or help at all.  And because they did not do kindness to these, they had not done it for the King.

Again, the Lord is interested in our hearts. Do we look for His coming with longing, serving Him no matter how long it takes?  Do we shun laziness, and honor Him always with what little or abundance that we have?  And are we forsaking self desires and from out hearts serving others with love and kindness?

He knows.

A NEW MONTH!

Day 310 – Reading – Mark 13

Read and believe in Jesus!

Mark 13.

Today’s reading is another account of the dire predictions we read about yesterday in Luke 21, and what we will read about again in Matthew 24 tomorrow.  The setting is Jerusalem, mid-week before the horrible time of Jesus’s suffering leading up to His crucifixion on Passover. He has had several encounters with Jewish leaders, who are even angrier now. 

Jesus also spoke some dire things about the future that have made His disciples curious.  When they leave the Temple, one of His disciples comments, “Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!”

Jesus answers him cryptically, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”  

As they walked through Jerusalem and out the gates, through the Kidron Valley to the Mount of Olives, I’m sure they were thinking about what Jesus had predicted.  From their viewpoint, they could see the Holy City across the Western horizon, with the Temple prominently standing. All the enormous stones were “golden” in the setting sun.  It was hard to imagine it all in rubble.  (But hadn’t that very thing happened centuries before when Babylon attacked and destroyed the city and temple, taking Israel into exile?  Would that happen again?  (Sadly, yes.)

Sadly, this first part would happen in less than 40 years after Jesus’ warning. The destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple buildings by the Roman General Titus occurred in 70 A.D., and thousands of Jews were killed or taken as slaves.

As they rested on the Mount of Olives – possibly in the Garden of Gethsemane – the four fisherman brothers (Peter & Andrew, James & John) approached Jesus privately. “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?”

They wondered if this would happen very soon, not-so soon, or not for a long while. Should they start preparing?

His answer may have been confusing. 

Jesus begins with warnings, “Beware that no one leads you astray.”  “Don’t be alarmed.”  “Be on your guard.”  “Don’t be anxious.”  “The one who endures to the end will be saved.”

This first section seems to refer to the near future, and the persecution they will suffer after He has departed.  However, it could refer to any suffering by believers throughout the centuries.  There will be “false Messiahs” coming that try to fool believers into believing that He has returned.  There will be earthquakes, famines, and wars between nations, but these are just the beginning.

They are to expect persecution from the Jews and governments (think of all that happens in the book of Acts) as they spread the Gospel.  They will be brought to court to give their testimony.  In those times, the Holy Spirit will show them what to say. 

And they are to expect persecution even from their own families, including being put to death (possibly out of fear for their own lives).

In the next section, Jesus seems to be warning believers IN THE END TIMES. (see verse 14, “let the reader understand.)  The Antichrist of the Great Tribulation will act and appear like that historical Antiochus Epiphanes, king of Syria in the second century B.C., who raided Jerusalem, killing 80,000 Jews, and then set up a statue of Zeus in the temple and sacrificed pigs on the holy altar. 

Jesus, “For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be.  And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved.  (Read Revelation for further details.)  But for the sake of the elect, whom God chose, He shortened the days.”

I’m sure the disciples were thoroughly scared by then (I would be).  But Jesus has a little more to reveal.

“After that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.”  (As if they were not fearful enough!)  

“And THEN they will see the Son of man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then He will send out the angels and gather His elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.”

And as for their “When?” question, Jesus gives an example of the fig tree.  When it begins to leaf out, you know that summer is near. “So, also, WHEN YOU SEE THESE THINGS TAKING PLACE, you know that he (and the Kingdom of God) is near, at the very gates. 

Then, before they can ask further, Jesus answers. “But concerning the DAY and the HOUR… no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.”  Only those alive in that final generation will live to see the return of Christ.

And some final warnings, “Be on guard. Keep awake. Stay awake.”
