THE NEW TESTAMENT!

Day 287 – Reading – Matthew 13 and Luke 8

Read and believe in Jesus!

Matthew 13 and Luke 8. (There are similar passages in both.)

From Luke’s gospel:  “Jesus went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the GOOD NEWS of the kingdom of God. And the TWELVE were with Him. And also, SOME WOMEN.” 

These were women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities:  Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susan.  And many others, who provided for them out of their own means.

(Paul also mentions faithful women who helped to support his ministry. Thank God that there are ways that we (women) can be a part of spreading the GOOD NEWS, too, if only by our finances.

Then both Matthew and Luke give accounts of some of the miracles that Jesus spoke. The most well-known one was the Parable of the Sower (or Seeds).  That day, Jesus sat down by the sea. This was a sign that He would be teaching. Rabbis sat, and their disciples gathered around them to listen.

In this instance, the crowds of learners (or those seeking healing) were too great, and Jesus got into a boat and sat down, facing the people.  This time, the crown STOOD on the beach.

A Sower went out to sow. (a very typical sight in Galilee).

  1. He sowed some seed that fell along the packed pathway, and the birds came and devoured them.
  2. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, but when the sun rose, they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away.
  3. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.
  4. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some, thirty.  He who HAS EARS, let him HEAR.

People – including the disciples – went away scratching their heads. 

“Why do you speak to them in parables?” they finally asked him.

“To YOU it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of Heaven, but to them it has not been given. For to the one who HAS, more will be given, and he will have an abundance.  But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. THAT’S why I speak to them in parables, because, seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.”

Then Jesus quoted from Isaiah 6:9-10, which basically says that people hear and see, but they don’t get the message, because their hearts are not open to understanding and repenting. They simply like “cute or funny stories.”

Jesus said of His disciples that they were blessed.  Their eyes and ears DID see and hear. Then He explained the Parable of the Sower to them, so they would see how to interpret all the parables Jesus spoke.

  1. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom of heaven, the evil one comes and snatches it from his heart. (That is what was sown along the path.)
  2. The next is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, yet… he has no root in himself. He endures for a while, but when tribulation or persecution arises because of the Word, he immediately falls away. (This is the one sown on rocky ground.)
  3. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful
  4. Lastly, as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields in one case 100fold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.

Jesus followed this with more parables, so they could practice understanding this new way that Jesus was teaching.

He told them the Parable of the WEEDS.  A man sowed good seed, but while he slept, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat.  When the plants came up and bore grain, the weeds could be identified. The farmer’s servants asked if they should PULL UP the weeds, but he said not too, for it would disturb and possibly kill the good seed.  He told them to let them grow together until the harvest.  Then they could gather the weeds first and throw them into the fire. And THEN gather the wheat into the barn.

The disciples sort of understood, but later in private, they asked Jesus to explain it. 

  1. The One who sows in the Son of Man, the field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. 
  2. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil.
  3. The harvest is the close of the age, and the reapers are angels.
  4. And as the weeds were gathered and thrown into the fire, so it will be then. The Son of Man and His angels will gather out of His kingdom all causes of sin and all law-breakers and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
  5. Then the wheat – the righteous – will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.

Jesus told them the Parable of the tiny Mustard Seed and the Parable of Leaven. Both will grow into much larger things.  This could represent evil, which must be stopped at the beginning, OR the Gospel truth that will spread and permeate hearts.

Jesus told them the Parables of The Hidden Treasure and The Pearl of Great Price. Both illustrate the great joy at finding Jesus, the Messiah, as one’s Savior and Lord.

The Parable of the Net is a bit like the one about good grain seeds and weeds.  Jesus tells about drawing in a net of fish, and picking out the good fish to save, and the bad fish to throw away. This will happen at the end of the age when angels separate the righteous and the evil, and throw these into the fiery furnace.

“Take heed HOW you hear” Jesus concludes, “for to the one who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he thinks he has will be taken away.”

(O LORD, please help me to keep my heart and mind OPEN to all you say. Let me know be proud and think I know it all. Let me not become speak with contempt about others who don’t understand.  O, let me be as a child, seeking honestly, and loving YOU.”

Day 271 – Reading – Nehemiah  8 – 10

Day 272 – Reading Nehemiah 11 – 13, and Psalm 126

Today’s reading tells of the people weeping, experiencing “the joy of the LORD,” celebrating and rejoicing, and a deep and long confession of their sin and the sins of their ancestors, ending in a solemn commitment in writing to obey God.  All this … because they heard God’s Word read and explained.

(****Oh, LORD, may my reading and study of Your word elicit weeping, confession of sin, then joy & celebration with a commitment to love and obey You…from my heart.)

Day 271 – Nehemiah 8.

It was the first of the seventh month, usually when the Feast of Tabernacles was celebrated.  The people gathered as one to hear the Law of Moses read.  A wooden platform was built to elevate Ezra and 14 other priests who would help to read and explain the law. This was set up in the large area facing the Water Gate, south of the Temple Mount. 

Ezra opened the scroll, and all the people stood.  He blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people said, “Amen, amen.” 

While the people stood in their places, they read from the book of The Law of God, clearly, and gave the sense (meaning) so the people understood.  They read from early morning until midday, about six hours or more…. all standing.  And all the people wept as they heard the words of the Law.

Nehemiah and Ezra said to the people. “This day is holy to the LORD your God; do not mourn or weep. Do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”  They told the people to go their way, eat and drink sweet wine, and send food to those who had nothing ready. It was a holy day to the LORD.  So there was great rejoicing.

The next day, all the heads of fathers’ houses, with the priests and Levites, came together to Ezra to study the words of the Law. They found it written that the people should dwell in booths during the feast of the seventh month, and that they should publish it in the surrounding area. “Go out to the hills and bring branches and make booths.” 

So they obeyed and set up booths everywhere, living in them for the week. And day by day, they read from the Book of the Law of God.  They celebrated for seven days, and on the eighth day, there was a solemn assembly, according to the rule.

Nehemiah 9.

And so, in the spirit of the solemn Day of Atonement, the people of Israel assembled with fasting and in sackcloth, and earth thrown on their heads (a sign of deep contrition). 

They STOOD and CONFESSED their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. 

They stood and read the Book of the Law of the LORD their God for a quarter of a day. For another quarter of the day, they made confession and worshiped the LORD their God.

On the stairs, the high priest Jeshua and other priests cried with a loud voice to the LORD their God.

Then Jeshua and the others told the people to stand up and bless the LORD their God.

“From everlasting to everlasting, Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise. YOU are the LORD, YOU alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them, and You preserve all of them, and the host of heaven worships You. You are the LORD, the God who chose Abraham….  And You have kept Your promise, for You are righteous.

And throughout the day, they recited the history of how God dealt with His chosen people, Israel.

  • “You are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love … and you did not forsake them….. even when they made a golden calf…
  • “You in your great mercy did not forsake them in the wilderness…”
  • “You gave your good Spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold your manna…. and gave them water… sustaining them for forty years.
  • “You gave them kingdoms and peoples and allotted to them every corner.”
  • “You multiplied their children as the stars of heaven…”
  • “So they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in Your great goodness.”

They confessed the sin and rebellion of their fathers.

  • “But they were disobedient and rebelled and cast your law behind them….
  • “You gave them to their enemies who made them suffer…
  • “But when they cried out to You, You heard from heaven and sent saviors….
  • “Yet they turned again away from You and did evil… so You sent their enemies again.
  • “Many times You delivered them according to Your mercies.
  • “Many years You bore with them and warned them, yet they would not listen.
  • “Nevertheless, in Your great mercies, You did not make an end of them or forsake them, for YOU are a gracious and merciful God.

Now, they confess their own sins, and acknowledge that where they are, is because of their sin. 

  • “Now, therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, You have dealt faithfully and we have acted wickedly.
  • “Our kings, princes, priests and fathers have not kept your law or paid attention to Your commandments and warnings, they did not serve You or turn from their wicked ways…..
  • And now, behold, WE ARE SLAVES THIS DAY, in this land You gave our fathers to enjoy.  WE ARE SLAVES, and the land’s rich yield goes to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins.  They rule over our bodies and over our livestock as they please, and we are in distress.

And so they wrote and signed a “firm covenant” to obey God and not repeat the sins of their fathers.

Nehemiah 10.

The people who signed the Covenant are listed in detail at the top of this chapter. Nehemiah, the Governor, is first. Then, all the leaders and nobles, priests, Levites, temple workers, and of the laity, those who had separated themselves from the peoples of the land to the Law of God, with their wives and children. They enter into a curse and an oath to walk in God’s Law that was given by Moses, and to do all the commandments of the LORD.   They also pledged to give the yearly Temple tax to support the religious workers, and the regular required offerings. 

“We obligate ourselves to bring the first fruits of our ground and of all fruit trees, year by year, to the house of the LORD.  Also, the firstborn of our sons, our cattle, herds, and flocks.”

“We will not neglect the house of our God.”

(These are bold and righteous commitments.  Can they keep them? (If they were like me and the people today, probably not, sadly.)

Day 272 – Nehemiah 11

The leaders of the people lived INSIDE Jerusalem, while the rest of the people lived outside the walls in their towns and villages.   So the people cast lots to bring ONE OUT OF TEN to live inside the city walls.  Nehemiah did this to hurry up the reestablishment of homes and businesses in Jerusalem.  Names of people and places are listed in this chapter.

Nehemiah 12.

Before the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple, there were 24 courses of priests, each course serving in the temple for a period of two weeks per year. (King David set up the schedule.)

Sadly, only FOUR of the 24 courses returned from Babylon.  These were now divided into 24 courses. 

  • (Only 22 are mentioned here, perhaps because these priestly families died out with no sons to follow at the time Zerubbabel originally named them.)

Next, the finished wall around Jerusalem was dedicated.   All the Levites were called in to celebrate the dedications with GLADNESS, THANKSGIVINGS, and SINGING.

The Priests and Levites first purified themselves, and then they purified the people and the gates and the wall.

Then Nehemiah brought the leaders of Judah up onto the wall and appointed two “great choirs” to give thanks.  One half went all the way south along the wall, and the other went to the north to meet them, all surrounding the House of the LORD.

They sang, offered sacrifices, and rejoiced, for God had made them rejoice with great joy. “And the joy of Jerusalem was heard far away!   For long ago in the days of David and Asaph, there were directors of the singers, and there were songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.” 

(Thank you, David.  And thanks to all our own music directors and leaders who lead congregations in praise in churches around the world!)

Psalm 126.

“When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion,

We were like those who dream.

Then our mouth was filled with laughter,

and our tongue with shouts of joy;

Then they said among the nations,

“The LORD has done great things for them”

The LORD has done great things for us;

We are glad.

Restore our fortunes, O LORD,

like streams in the Negev!

Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy!

He who goes out weeping,

bearing the seed for sowing,

shall come home wit shouts of joy,

bringing his sheaves with him.

Nehemiah 13.

Now in the 32nd year of King Artaxerxes, Nehemiah returned to Persia as he said he would.  He’d organized and led the people to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and they’d done it with God’s help and protection. The wall had been dedicated.  

But while he was back in Persia, bad things were happening again.  He (obviously) got news of it and asked permission from the king to return.

Problem #1. While they were reading from the Law of Moses each day in the annual cycle, they came on the portion (Deut. 23:3-6) that said “No Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the Assembly of God because of that event with Balaam cursing them as they approached the Promised Land.”

As soon as they heard that law, the people separated out those of foreign descent from the temple workers, but…..  before the reading and the doing of this law, something awful had happened.  One of the priests – Eliashib, whom Nehemiah had caught siding with the enemy earlier (Neh. 2:10) – had smuggled Tobiah into one of the storage rooms of the temple, and he was LIVING THERE!   THE NERVE!

(You remember Tobiah, right?  He and Sanballat were two of the main hindrances to Nehemiah’s wall work.)

SO…………  when Nehemiah got back, he was VERY ANGRY!  He threw out Tobiah and all his household furniture from the chamber. Then he gave orders for the chamber to be cleansed, and for the vessels of the House of God to be brought back in.

Problem #2. And while he was at it, Nehemiah found that the portions of support had not been given to the Levites, so they had gone home to work in their fields. 

Nehemiah confronted the officials, gathered the Levites back to their stations, and got after the people until they brought their tithes of grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses. He then appointed a reliable priest, a scribe, a Levite, and his assistant to fairly distribute to the Levites. 

Then Nehemiah prayed, “Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for His service.”

Problem #3. Then our eagle-eyed Nehemiah spotted people working on the Sabbath. They were treading grapes in the winepresses, and bringing in heaps of grain and fruit and fish which they loaded and brought into Jerusalem to sell on the Sabbath!!!   

Nehemiah confronted the leaders about this broken law. “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day?  Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city??? You are bringing MORE wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

Nehemiah began closing all the gates in the walls of Jerusalem as it started to get dark before the Sabbath.  He gave orders for them not to be opened until AFTER the Sabbath.  And he stationed his guards to make sure it happened. 

Problem #4. Sooo… the merchants simply unloaded all their stuff outside the wall and held a “market” there.  But Nehemiah got after them as well.  “If you do this again, I will lay hands on you!”

He then told the Levites that THEY should purify themselves and come guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day HOLY.

And Nehemiah prayed, “Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.”

Problem #5. And….. AGAIN…… Nehemiah saw Jews who had married women from Ashdod (Philistia), Ammon, and Moab.  And half their children couldn’t even speak Hebrew.

Nehemiah confronted them.  And cursed them.   And beat some of them.  And pulled out their hair!

(I’d say he was pretty angry and zealous for the LORD!!)

And Nehemiah made them swear an oath NOT to give their daughters or take daughters to foreigners.

“Did not Solomon, king of Israel, sin on account of such women???  Among the nations, there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel……. nevertheless, FOREIGN WOMEN made even him to sin!  Shall YOU now act treacherously against our God?

Nehemiah noticed that one of the sons of the high priest had married one of Sanballat’s daughters!!!  Nehemiah CHASED HIM AWAY!

And Nehemiah prayed, “Remember them, O my God, because they have desecrated the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.

Problems #6+. Then Nehemiah cleansed them from everything foreign … and he established the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work … and he provided for the wood offering at appointed times, and for first fruits.

Wow.

And he prayed, “Remember me, O my God, for good.”

(What a man and what a leader Nehemiah was!  He was strong and hard on sin.  He did not get distracted from his work. He honored his word.  He was honest and giving.  It seems he knew MORE of the law than even the priests and Levites knew.  He led the people in righteousness. And he prayed … again and again.

O LORD, for men in leadership like this today!  And I ask that some of Nehemiah’s “straight path” ways would be evident in me too.)

Day 227 – Reading – Jeremiah 30 – 31

Read today’s Scriptures … ANYWHERE you find yourself this summer. Stay in the WORD!

 

Jeremiah 30.

This chapter begins with a wonderful promise to the exiled Jews, and Jeremiah is to write it in a book so it will not be lost or forgotten.

  • “Behold, days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will restore the fortunes of my people – Israel and Judah,” says the LORD, “and I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall take possession of it.”

This verse is a brief summary of chapters 30-33. It is a double explanation of both Israel’s return from exile and their final restoration to the land for the Messiah’s Kingdom Rule for 1,000 years. It is meant to encourage.

  • They shall serve the LORD their God and David their king, whom I will raise up for them.
  • Their prince shall be one of themselves; their ruler shall come out from their midst; I will make hm draw near…
  • In the latter days, you will understand this.

Jeremiah 31.

Still speaking of Messiah’s Kingdom, 

  • At that time, declares the LORD, I will be the God of ALL THE CLANS of Israel and they shall be MY PEOPLE.
  • I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore, I have continued my faithfulness to you.
  • Again, I will build you, and you shall be built, O virgin Israel:
  • Again, you shall adorn yourself with tambourines and shall go forth in the dance of the merry makers.
  • Again, you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant and shall enjoy the fruit.
  • Sing aloud with gladness for Jacob, and raise shouts for the chief of the nations, proclaim, give praise…
  • He who scattered Israel will gather him, and will keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock. 
  • For the LORD has ransomed Jacob and has redeemed him from hands too strong for him.
  • They shall come and sing aloud on the height of Zion, and they shall be radiant over the GOODNESS OF THE LORD.
  • I will turn their mourning into joy; I will comfort them, and give them gladness for sorrow … and my people shall be satisfied WITH MY GOODNESS.
  • For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.
  • Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a NEW COVENANT with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, NOT like the covenant that I made with their fathers. 
  • But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days. I will put my law within them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.  And they shall ALL know me, from the least to the greatest.
  • I will forget their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.  

What a glorious message Jeremiah was writing in his book for the people of God. It would encourage them and give them hope.  We too have a book from God that tells of His GOODNESS,  His love, His comfort, and His promise that He has forgotten our iniquity and does remember our sin NO MORE.  It’s because of Jesus.  PRAISE HIM!

Day 211 – Reading – Isaiah 54 – 58.

Read today’s Scriptures.  

Isaiah 54.

Yesterday, we read that grand chapter about Jesus purchasing our salvation by giving His own life.

Today’s chapters begin with joy.

  • Sing, O barren one, you who did not bear; break forth into singing and cry aloud, you who have not been in labor, for the children of the desolate one will be more than the children of her who is married, says the LORD.
  • For your Maker is your husband, the LORD of hosts is His name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called.

Israel has been in exile and dispersion. They are destitute and disgraced as a childless woman.   But Isaiah calls for singing because of the LORD’s promise of future fruitfulness. 

  • O afflicted one, storm-tossed and not comforted, behold…”   “All your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.  In righteousness you shall be established; you shall be far from oppression, for you shall not fear, and far from terror, for it shall not come near you.

Isaiah 55.

This chapter is full of the compassion of the LORD towards Israel and “everyone.”

  • Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat!
  • Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.  Why do you spend your money on that which is not bread, and your labor on that which does not satisfy?
  • LISTEN diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.  INCLINE YOUR EAR, and come to me; HEAR, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant,”

And this clear invitation to salvation.

  • Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
  • For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are you ways my ways, declares the LORD.
  • For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Isaiah 56.

This chapter gives hope to the outcasts, foreigners, and eunuchs in the future kingdom.  (Remember the Babylonians made eunuchs of many young men who would serve in their palaces, and the Mosaic law forbade them to enter into worship.  Now God was opening His arms.)

Those outside Israel, acceptance.

  • Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say, ‘The LORD will surely separate me from His people.”   
  • The foreigners who join themselves to the LORD, to minister to Him, to love the Name of the LORD, and to be His servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it and holds fast my covenant — these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my alter; for my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”

And hope for those made eunuchs.

  • Let not the eunuch say, “Behold, I am a dry tree.”
  • For thus says the LORD: “To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose the things that please me and hold fast my covenant, I will give in my house and within my walls a monument and a name that shall not be cut off.”

Isaiah 57.

And yet God’s own Israel had strayed away from Him and into idolatry, including immorality, debauchery, and child sacrifice.

  • But you, draw near, you sons of the sorceress, offspring of the adulterer and the loose woman.
  • Whom did you dread and fear that you lied, and did not remember me, did not lay it to heart?  Have I not held my peace, even for a long time, and you do not fear me.
  • When you cry out, let your collection of idols deliver you!  
  • But…. he who takes refuge in Me shall possess the land and shall inherit my holy mountain.

Again hope from the Almighty God.

  • For thus says, the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy;  “I dwell in the high and holy place, and ALSO with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.  For I will not contend forever, nor will I always  be angry!”

Praise God!  Thank You, LORD.

  • “Peace, peace, to the far and the near, says the LORD, “and I will heal him.
  • But the wicked…. “There is no peace” says my God, “for the wicked.”

Isaiah 58.

The LORD tells Isaiah that he has two things against His people, Israel: the way they FAST, and the way they treat THE SABBATH.  God says, “Lift up your voice like a trumpet; declare to my people their transgression.”

 Israel “sought God daily,” “delighted to know His ways,” “did righteousness,” “asked God for righteous judgments,” and “delighted to draw near to Him.”  So WHY, they asked, does the Lord not notice their fasting and humility?

WHY???  (And this is such a good lesson for us as well.  What are our MOTIVES in serving and worshipping God?

  • “Because,” says the LORD. “In the day of your fast, you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers.  You fast only to quarrel and fight and hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours will not make your voice to be heard on high.
  • “IS NOT THIS THE FAST THAT I CHOOSE;  to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke?
  • IS IT NOT TO share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

And what happens when the heart is right with God when it fasts?

  • THEN shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
  • THEN you shall call, and the LORD will answer; you shall cry and He will say, “Here I am.”

(Read here the other promises of God for those who deny themselves and pour themselves out for the hungry and afflicted.)

As for keeping the Sabbath…

  • If you turn back from doing YOUR pleasure on My holy day, and call the Sabbath a delight; if you honor it, not going your own ways, or seeking your own pleasure, or talking idly,
  • THEN I will make you ride on the heights of the earth. And I will feed you with the heritage of Jacob, your father.

Doesn’t your heart swell with all the promises of God, if we would only turn to Him in love and humility!  Our God is so good and kind. His heart is FOR us!  O LORD, please help me to “deny my self” and set my face and desire on YOU.

Day 210 – Reading – Isaiah 49 – 53.

Read today’s Scriptures.  

Isaiah 49.

“Listen to me, O coastlands…”  Who are the coastlands?  As Isaiah says, they are “peoples from afar.” Coastlands most likely refers to Gentiles in the unknown regions of Isaiah’s day.  Think: the coasts of the countries that circle the Mediterranean Sea. In the prophets’ time, Tarshish, or Spain, was really, really far away. Gentiles, is another way to think of “coastlands.”  And these might include the lands that at that time were not yet even discovered.

So America… head’s up!  Isaiah is going to tell you about Jesus, the LORD’s “Suffering Servant.”  It is Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who was slain to redeem God’s elect from every nation.

  • “I will make you as a light for the nations (Gentile), that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”

But, no, God has not forsaken Israel for the Gentiles!

  • “Can a woman forget her nursing child, that I should have no compassion on the son of her womb?  Even THESE may forget, yet I will not forget you.  Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…”

Isaiah 50.

Verses 4-11 of this chapter picture Jesus Christ, “the suffering servant.”

  • “I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out my beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.”

And a call to the unconverted to believe and be saved.

  • “Let him who walks in darkness and has no light … trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.”

Isaiah 51.

In this chapter, God comforts and encourages both Jew and Gentile.

  • “Look to Abraham, your father and to Sarah who bore you; for he was but ONE when I called him, that I might bless him and MULTIPLY him. 
  • “For the Lord comforts Zion … joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song.
  • “And the ransomed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

And…

  • “My righteousness draws near, my salvation has gone out, and my arms will judge the peoples; the COASTLANDS hope for me, and for my arm they wait.

Isaiah 52.

Again Isaiah foretells a time of Israel being restored to their land and to glory when their Redeemer comes to rule.

  • “You were sold for nothing (in the countries of the world), and you shall be redeemed without money.”

And after that time messengers will go throughout the mountains around Jerusalem, to spread the good news that redeemed Israel has returned.  (Paul later picks this up to show the spread of the Gospel, in Romans 10)

  • How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns.”

Then Isaiah gives a summary and preview of the humiliation and exultation of the “Servant.” (The details will be given in the following chapter.)

  • “Behold, my servant shall act wisely; He shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted.  As many were astonished at you — his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and His form beyond that of the children of mankind — so shall He sprinkle (with his own blood) many nations; kings shall shut their mouths because of Him;”

Isaiah 53.

And then that great chapter that describes the excruciating death of Jesus for our sins and our redemption.  (Many Jews call this the “forbidden chapter.” Sometimes it is even omitted from their scriptures.)  

Who has believed what he has heard from us?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?

For He grew up before him like a young plant, 
and like a root out of dry ground:
He had no form or majesty that we should look at Him,
and no beauty that we should desire Him.

He was despised and rejected by men;
a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
He was despised, and we esteemed Him not.

Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;
yet, we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

But he was wounded for OUR transgressions;
He was crushed for OUR iniquities;
upon Him was the chastisement that brought US peace,
and with His stripes WE are healed.

All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned -- every one -- to his own way;
and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed, and He was afflicted,
yet He opened not his mouth;
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
so He opened not His mouth.

By oppression and judgment, He was taken away;
and as for His generation, who considered
that He was cut off out of the land of the living,
stricken for the transgression of my people?

And they made His grave with the wicked 
and with a rich man in his death,
although He had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in His mouth.

Yet, it was the will of the LORD to crush Him,
He has put Him to grief;
when His soul makes an offering for guilt,
He shall see His offspring; 
He shall prolong His days;
the will of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.

Out of the anguish of His soul 
He shall see and be satisfied;
by His knowledge shall the righteous One, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and He shall bear their iniquities.

Therefore, I will divide Him a portion with the many,
and He shall divide the spoil with the strong,

because He poured out His soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
Yet, He bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.

**** Thank You, LORD, for your sending Jesus to be the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.  Jesus did that by sacrificing His own life, taking our sin, and dying as the punishment we deserved.  Oh, God!  How great a salvation you planned!

Read today’s Scriptures.  

Day 201, Hosea 1.

Hosea was a prophet in the time of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and good King Hezekiah in the south (and while evil King Jeroboam II reigned in the north).  Hosea means “salvation,” like Joshua and Yeshua.  Although he addressed both Israel and Judah, he referred to the king of Israel as “our king.”  Only he and Jonah were “writing prophets” from the northern kingdom.  He prophesied for 45 years and was a contemporary of Isaiah.

Hosea was instructed to marry a woman and experience her unfaithfulness, much as God with His beloved Israel, and then to show forgiving love.

  • The LORD:  “Go, take to yourself a wife of whoredom (unfaithfulness) and have children of whoredom, for the land commits great whoredom (unfaithfulness) by forsaking the LORD.

And so Hosea obeyed and married Gomer.  She bore a son.

  • And the LORD said to him, “Call his name Jezreel, for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel.”

Then Gomer gave birth to a daughter.

  • The LORD said, “Call her name ‘No Mercy,’ for I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel.”

When the daughter was weaned, Gomer had a second son.

  • The LORD said, “Call his name ‘Not My People,’ for you are not my people (Israel) and I am not your God.”

And yet God tells him of a time when Israel will be like the sand of the sea, and where it was said, “Not my people,” they shall be called “Children of the Living God.”

Hosea 2.

God tells Hosea to “plead with the nation of Israel (also in language reflecting Gomer, Hosea’s wife), that she put away her whoring and adultery, lest “I make her like a wilderness, a parched land, and kill her with thirst.”

Israel went after her “lovers” (false gods), praising THEM for the food, drink, and clothing she had, angering God.

  • “She did not know that it was ‘I’ who gave her the grain, the wine, and the oil, and who lavished on her silver and gold… WHICH SHE USED FOR BAAL.”
  • “Therefore, I will take back my grain in its time, and my wine in its season, and I will take my wool and my flax which were to cover her nakedness.  I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers.”
  • “I will punish her for when she went after her ‘lovers’ and forgot me,” declares the LORD.

Oh, but see the mercy and tenderness with which He will one day treat Israel!

  • “Therefore, behold, I will allure her, and bring her into the wilderness, and speak tenderly to her. And I will give her her vineyards and make a door of hope.”
  • And in that day, you will call me “My husband.”  I will betroth her to me in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love and in mercy. I will betroth her to me in FAITHFULNESS.”
  • ‘And I will have mercy on “NO MERCY.”  And I will say to “NOT MY PEOPLE,” ‘You ARE my people.”

Hosea 3.

  • The LORD:   “Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress, EVEN AS the LORD loves the children of Israel, though they turn to other gods. “

So Hosea bought Gomer back with 15 shekels of silver and some barley.  And he told her, “You must dwell as mine. You shall not play the whore or belong to another man.”

Hosea 4.

Then, through Hosea, the LORD comes down hard on Israel, especially her priests.  “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.  Because YOU have rejected knowledge, I reject YOU from being a priest to me.”

Then an entire section where God rants on His people for being unfaithful to husbands and to Him, worshiping idols with cult prostitutes.

“Though YOU play the whore, O Israel … let not JUDAH become guilty!”  (But alas, they follow Israel’s lead.)

Hosea 5.

  • “Hear this, O priests!  Pay attention, O house of Israel!  Give ear, O house of the king! For the judgment is for you!  I will discipline ALL of them.”
  • “Israel and Ephraim shall stumble in his guilt:  JUDAH also shall stumble with them….”
  • “I will be like a lion to Ephraim, and like a young lion to the house of Judah. 

God then issues a warning, “I will return again to MY PLACE until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face, and in their distress earnestly seek me.”

Hosea 6.

The prophet writes Israel’s FUTURE words. – “Come, let us return to the LORD; for he has torn us, that He may heal us; he has struck us down, and He will bind us up. Let us know; let us press on to know the LORD.

But until then, God sees their unfaithful ways.  “For I desire steadfast love and NOT sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than offerings.

Hosea 7.

There seems to be no hope for Israel. Their judgment of doom is set. 

  • “Woe to them, for they have strayed from me!  Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against me!  I WOULD redeem them, but they speak lies against me.  They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds. They rebel against me.”

Day 202, Hosea 8.

Assyria, like a vulture, hovers over the house of Israel. 

God says, “I have spurned your calf, O Samaria.  For it is from Israel; a craftsman made it; it is not God. the calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces.

Israel… sows the wind and they shall reap the whirlwind. 

Israel has forgotten his Maker….

Hosea 9.

  • Hosea declares, “The days of punishment have come; the days of recompense have come: Israel shall know it.” 
  • “He will remember their iniquity; he will punish their sins.”
  • “Ephraim’s glory shall fly away like a bird — no birth, no pregnancy, no conception! (Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.) Even if they bring up children, I will bereave them till NONE is left.  Woe to them if I depart from them.  Yes, even though they give birth, I will put their beloved children to death.”  
  • “My God will reject them because they have not listened to Him.“

Hosea 10.

Prosperity resulted in spiritual corruption.

  • “Israel is a luxuriant vine that yields its fruit. The more his fruit increased, the more altars he built; as his country improved, he improved his pillars. 
  • Their heart is false; now they must bear their guilt. The LORD will break down their altars and destroy their pillars. 

The inhabitants of Samaria tremble for “the calf.”  The people mourn for it, and so do its idolatrous priests, for it has departed from them.  THE THING itself shall be carried to Assyria as tribute to the king. Ephraim shall be put to shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol.

And Hosea cries out!

  • “Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the LORD, that He may come and rain righteousness upon you.”

And then the solemn declaration:

  • “At dawn, the king of Israel shall be utterly cut off.”

Hosea 11.

This chapter shows Israel’s refusal of God, and God’s extreme LOVE FOR THEM. 

“When Israel was a child, I loved him… I taught him to walk, I took him up by his arms… I led him with cords of kindness and bands of love… I became to him as one who eases the yoke.. I bent down to him and fed him…

  • How can I give you up, O Ephraim? How can I hand you over, O Israel?  My heart recoils within me; my compassion grows warm and tender. I will not execute my burning anger; I will not again destroy Ephraim; for I am God and not a man, the Holy One in your midst, and I will not come in wrath.”

Hosea 12.

In this chapter, the LORD reviews the history of Jacob/Israel from Rebekah’s womb till the time they came up from Egypt.

Hoshea 13.

The LORD relentlessly pours on words of judgment of the ungrateful and proud Israel.  They sinned more and more, making images for themselves and offered human sacrifices, and “kissed calves” (devotion to their idols).

“But I AM the LORD your God. You know no God but Me, and besides Me there is no Savior.”

“Samaria shall bear her guilt because she rebelled against her God; they shall fall by the sword.

Hosea 14.

And in the final chapter, Hosea reveals God’s heart – a plea for Israel to return to their God.

His promise,

  • ‘I will heal their apostasy; I will love them freely, for my anger has turned from them. 

And Hosea adds his own epilogue. 

  • Whoever is wise, let him understand these things; whoever is discerning, let him know them; for the ways of the LORD are right, and the upright walk in them … but transgressors stumble at them.

.

Good words for us too – from Hosea’s closing epilogue, to God’s weeping heart over the sinner, to His offers of restoration. Don’t you just love Him so much!!  But also that sin is unfaithfulness to our God, and must be stopped or judged.

LORD, Help me to look in my own heart.  Are there idols there?  Do I depend on my own strength rather than Yours?  Do I praise others for what YOU do for me daily? Help me to be faithful!  Oh, turn my heart wholly towards You, O my God!  Thank you for your faithfulness, care and love for me!

Day 152 – 2 Chronicles 1.

This chapter repeats much of what we read in 1 Kings 3-4. 

King Solomon and “all” Israel went to Gibeon, where the old Tabernacle that Moses built still stood.  David had brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem to dwell in a tent he made for it.  But the bronze altar was still at Gibeon, and at this time, King Solomon offered 1,000 burnt offerings on it. 

That night, God appeared to him, saying, “Ask what I shall give you.”

After some thought, Solomon said, “Give me now wisdom and knowledge, for who can govern this people of Yours, which is so great?”

God was pleased. “Wisdom and knowledge are granted to you.  I will also give you riches, possessions, and honor such as none of the kings had who were before you or shall be after you.”

And the king made silver and gold as common in Jerusalem as stone.”

Psalm 72. 

A psalm of Solomon.

  • “Give the king Your justice, O God, and Your righteousness to the royal son!  May he judge Your people with righteousness and Your poor with justice.
  • “May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!”
  • “In his days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound till the moon be no more.
  • “Long may he live; may the gold of Sheba be given to him!  May prayer be made for him continually and blessings invoked for him all the day.

And then,

  • “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things. Blessed be His glorious Name forever; may the whole earth be filled with His glory!  Amen and Amen!

Day 153 – Song of Solomon 1-8.

Also titled the Song of Songs, meaning that this song is the best among Solomon’s 1,005 musical works.  It is a true-life love song.  Solomon appears as “the beloved.”  The woman is called “the Shulamite Maiden.”  She is probably Solomon’s first wife (Ecclesiastes 9:9) before he sinned by adding 699 other wives and 300 concubines. (1 Kings 11:3).  Solomon’s Song exalts the purity of marital affection and romance. 

Some strained interpretations use the allegory of God and Israel or Christ and the Church, but that’s misleading.  It’s a story of Solomon and the love of his youth.  It’s very picturesque and names several places that existed at the time.

Read it and “say or sing” portions of it to your own true love!  And praise God that He put this in His Word.

DAY 96.

Judges 19.

Wow, today, we finish Judges.  I’m glad we do. This section is really horrible.  It shows so clearly what happens when people turn from God and “everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

This is a story about a despicable Levite (not the same one who traveled north with the Danites).  This one lived in the hill country of Ephraim. He took a concubine (servant with benefits) from the tribe of Judah. She was unfaithful to him and ran home. The Levite went there to get her and was kind to her, but the woman’s father kept him staying day after day and night after night eating and drinking. Finally the Levite got tired of that and left with the woman.

In another town in the land of Benjamin, they were forced to spend the night in the town square until a nice old man said it wasn’t safe and invited them to stay with him.  So they were eating and drinking and making merry.

And then….  (Replay Sodom at Lot’s house.)  Men from the city came seeking the Levite. These aberrant men lusted after him. The old man went out to calm them down and offered his two daughter for them to “use.”  But their lust was not satisfied and demanded the man.  Then the Levite threw  out his concubine forcibly. The men abused her all night until she died.

Next morning, the Levite saw her lying at his doorstep. “C’mon let’s go.” But she didn’t move. He three her body on his donkey and took her home.  THERE, HE TOOK A KNIFE LAND CUT HER UP INTO PIECES!!!!!  THEN HE SENT ONE OF EACH OF THE TWELVE PIECES THROUGHOUT ISRAEL TO THE TRIBES.”

Judges 20.

Well, all the men of Israel came out – from Dan to Beersheba (far north to far south) – over 400K men.

“This is what happened when I stayed in a town in Benjamin.” the Levite said.

After a lot of palaver, talking, and deciding, including inquiring the High Priest about what to do, Israel gathered together and fought against Benjamin, destroying over 25K of the men of valor. Then they struck the cities, and men and beasts with the edge of their swords. And finally set all the towns on fire.

Judges 21.

Then when the remaining Benjamite people wept, saying, “O LORD, the God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel, that today there should be one tribe lacking in Israel?”

“What shall we do?”  Their great idea was to go up to an area that had not sent men to fight, kill all the men and wives, and bring back the virgins to the remaining men of Benjamin.  They did, and brought back 400 virgins.  Peace was proclaimed and the women were given to the tribe of Benjamin.  And, oh my, there was still not enough. So the army went and captured 200 more virgins from Shiloh and gave them to fill the quota.

The people of Benjamin took the wives, returned to their inheritance and rebuilt the towns and lived in them.  And the army of tribes went back home and did likewise.

There was no king.

Everyone did what was right in their own eyes.

(NO ONE thought to inquire of the LORD, turn to Him, seek His face…. or even read His Law.)

I am so glad this is the last of the book of Judges.

Tomorrow we’ll begin a book of HOPE after DISPAIR … a godly woman meets a godly man, and the royal line is established. Praise God!

DAY 97.

Ruth 1.

“In the days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land.”  The text doesn’t say exactly, but figuring backward, the story could have happened during the judgeship of Tola (23 years) and Jair (22 years) from Judges 10: 1-5. 

A (local?) famine was in the land, and a man, Elimelech (my God is king). his wife, Naomi (pleasant), and their two grown sons, Mahlon (sick) and Chillion (pining) from the tribe of Judah (important) living in Bethlehem decided to migrate to Moab until the famine was over.  Sadly, Elimelech died there.  Naomi’s sons married Moabite women, Orpah (stubborn) and Ruth (friendship), but it doesn’t seem any children were born from these unions.  Finally, the two sons also died.

Three widows. In a pagan land.

It’s been ten years. Naomi decides to go home.  She sends her daughters-in-law back to their homes in hopes they can remarry and have good lives. Orpah hugs her and leaves. But Ruth refuses, even when Naomi insists and tells her the bleak story of what their lives would be like in Israel as widows.

Nope. Ruth remains firm. “Do not urge me to leave you, or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.  Where you die, I will die and there be buried.  May the LORD do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.”

WOW. How many young women love their mothers-in-law like that today?

Naomi gives in and the two make their way back to Bethlehem. Naomi tells the women of the town to call her “Mara” (bitter) “for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went away full and the LORD has brought me back empty.”

It was near the end of April, the time of barley harvest (the famine had ended!).

Ruth 2.

A close relative of Naomi’s husband (important), whose name was Boaz (strength) was someone she could “maybe” go to for help. He was “a man of valor” (like Gideon and Jephthah) and could manage and protect his property. He’d never married, or maybe was a widower too.

Naomi sent Ruth to his barley fields to “glean.” God’s law said that farmers were to leave the corners of their fields, and any grain that dropped, for the poor to pick up. (See Leviticus 19:10-11, 23:22)  Ruth labored long and well in Boaz’s field.  Later he happened to pass by and saw her. He asked his men who she was and learned her story, 

Boaz went to Ruth and told her to stay and work in his fields only. His men would not interfere, and if she got thirsty, she was to go to the water the young men had drawn and drink. 

Ruth bowed deeply and asked why he was so kind. He told her he’d heard about her faithfulness to Naomi. “The LORD repay you and may a full reward be given you by the LORD under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”

At the noon break, he invited her to eat bread, roasted grain, and wine with the reapers. When she returned to work, Boaz told his workers, “Let her work among the sheaves too, and do not reproach her. Also, pull out some stalks from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up.”

After gleaning all day (back-breaking work) she went to the threshing floor and beat out the grain. This she took to Naomi (about 30-40 pounds!).  Naomi was astounded at the amount and told her to stay in his field. So Ruth worked there until the end of the barley harvest.

Meanwhile, Naomi’s heart lifted. Boaz was a near redeemer in her family. That meant he could rescue them. He could marry Ruth, and their firstborn would be accounted to Abimelech’s line, like a grandchild to Naomi, so her husband’s name wouldn’t be lost in Israel. After that, the children would be for Boaz.

Ruth 3.

Naomi tells Ruth about Boaz as their redeemer and explains what she should do to let him know that she is available and willing for him to redeem. 

He was willing and gave her a pledge of 6 measures of barley.  He explained that there was one glitch (a closer redeemer) that he had to take care of first. She should be patient.

Ruth 4.

Boaz went to the gate of the city – where business was transacted – and approached the man who was a closer redeemer. He told the man about Ruth and Naomi and asked if HE wanted to be the redeemer.

At first, the man was willing, but when he learned there was no offspring from Elimelech, and he would need to provide one, he turned down the offer.  He had children of his own, and didn’t want to split up their inheritance for the dead man’s offspring.

Boaz was formal, but inside he was rejoicing. Ruth could be his. And sure enough, soon they were married.  And the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son. Naomi was once again blessed by the LORD, and when she held the baby boy, her own grandson, she rejoiced.

They named him Obed.  He was the father of Jesse, who was the father of David, who would become KING in Israel (and ancestor of the Messiah, Jesus).

  • Wow, what a wonderful ending, after those horrid accounts in the book of Judges.  During all that sin and forsaking of the law, God had His eye on one family, descended from Judah through Perez, Salmon (with Rahab), Boaz, and on to David, a “man after God’s own heart” and eventually to the “Son of David,” to the Savior, His only begotten Son, Jesus. PRAISE HIM!

Day 74.  Reading Deuteronomy 11 – 13.

Deuteronomy 11.

Again, Moses pounds home the promises and warnings of Israel’s God, “Love the LORD your God and keep His charge, His statutes, His rules, and His commandments always … that you may be strong, and go in and take possession of the land, and that you may live long in the land.” 

“That land drinks water by the rain from heaven, a land that the LORD your God cares for. His eyes are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. He will give rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later raid, that you may gather in your grain, wine, and oil. He will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and you shall eat and be full.”

“So love the LORD your God, and serve Him with all your heart and soul.”  “And if you are careful to do all the commandment that I command you to do, loving the LORD your God, walking in all His ways, and holding fast to him … then the LORD will drive out all those nations before you, nations greater and mightier than you. Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours. NO ONE will stand against you. The fear of you and the dread of you the LORD will put on all the land.”

“But if you do not… a curse.

Deuteronomy 12.

Their main task in conquering the land is to “destroy all the places where the nations serve their gods, on mountains, hills and under every green tree. They are to tear down, dash into pieces, burn, chop into pieces, and utterly destroy any images and idols. They are to NOT, NOT, NOT worship them, in any way, place, shape or form.  AND, they shall worship and sacrifice ONLY at the place where the LORD chooses to put His name and home. And ONLY in the manner He has taught them.

But… they CAN eat any clean meat now, whenever they wish, as much as they wish, of their flocks and herds and of gazelles or deer.  Only the animals pledged for sacrifice, offerings, and vows they shall only eat in God’s presence.

Deuteronomy 12.

WARNING:  If anyone – a dreamer of dreams or “prophet” tells you to go after other gods to serve them -DO NOT LISTEN!  That person shall be put to death, and so you shall purge evil from your midst. 

EVEN if your own brother, mother, or friend entices you to serve other gods, DO NOT YIELD or LISTEN to them. You shall not pity, conceal, or spare him.  You shall kill him. (stone him) YOU, YOURSELF shall cast the first stone!

AND if any worthless men in another city try to draw away the inhabitants to serve other gods, you shall (first) inquire, make search, and ask diligently.  If it is so, then you shall destroy the inhabitants of that city with the sword – all who are in that city, even its cattle, and burn everything else.  WOW. GOD IS SERIOUS!

****O LORD, if only WE were as diligent in destroying the things in our lives that distract us from your Word, or prayer or in serving You in any way. Help us to deny ourselves, give them up, throw them away, ask others to help us in our addictive ways … and repent to serve and love YOU ONLY!

Day 72.  Reading Deuteronomy 5 – 7.

Deuteronomy 5.

Moses summoned all Israel and said to them,

“Hear O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today,

and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.”

To the new generation, Moses carefully reviews the Ten Commandments of Exodus 20. “I AM the LORD your God…..

  • You shall have NO other gods before me
  • You shall NOT make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything…. YOu shall now bow down to them or serve them, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God
  • You shall NOT take the name of the LORD your God in vain
  • You SHALL observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God
  • You SHALL honor your father and mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and it shall go well with you in the Land your God is giving you
  • You shall NOT murder
  • You shall NOT commit adultery
  • You shall NOT steal
  • You shall NOT covet … anything that is your neighbor’s.

You shall be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you.

You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 

You shall walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you,

Deuteronomy 6.

Moses continues,

“HEAR, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is ONE.

You shall love the LORD your God

with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

“These words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”

(God’s very Words should be in the CENTER of all areas of their (our) lives!)

It is the LORD your God you shall fear.

HIM you shall serve.

By His name you shall swear.

You shall NOT go after other gods.

You shall NOT put the LORD your God to the test.

You shall do what is right and good in the sight of the LORD that it may go well with you.

Deuteronomy 7.

As for the seven nations (more numerous and mightier than them),

  • Israel was to drive out of the Land.
  • defeat them and devote them to complete destruction.
  • make NO covenant with them and show no mercy to them.
  • not intermarry with them, give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for you sons.
  • break down their alters, dash in pieces their pillars, chop down their Asherim, and burn their carven images with fire.

“For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has CHOSEN you to be a people for His treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.  It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set His love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all the peoples, but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that He swore to your fathers.”

“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God, who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments … to a thousand generations.”

Wow.  And now the LORD has said He’s chosen and loves all those who believe in His Son, Jesus, and will give them life and an eternal home with Him. Praise His Name!
